A ntisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) can be quite a debilitating psychological disorder. In patients it can hinder the establishment of friendship, foster a reckless disregard for safety and cause a child to become rather problematic, among other things. If not treated at an early age, it can lead to many other mental disorders well into adult life.

There have been millions of cases throughout history of antisocial personality disorder. Since it has many complicated symptoms and manifestations, it can be rather hard to diagnose. Should you think a loved one may be suffering from ASPD, it is important to get them to a professional psychologist for a thorough examination.

Symptoms of ASPD include:
  • Irresponsibility

  • Disregard for right and wrong

  • Persistent lying or deceit

  • Manipulation

  • Criminal behavior

  • Child abuse or neglect

  • Intimidation

  • Violent behavior

  • Lack of empathy

  • Impulsive behavior

  • Recurring abusive relationships
The first step to getting treatment is discovering if there is a problem in the first place. Many people fear the outcome of a diagnosis, but in regards to sociopathy it is better to know so you can receive treatment. Here are some facts about the disorder:
  • ASPD is when a person has absolutely no regard to anyone other than his or herself. Patients with this mental disorder are incapable of seeing past their own desires and how some of their choices may affect others.

  • Sociopathy has a long history of being misdiagnosed. Most people believed that patients have some sort of attention-deficit disorder or are going through a phase and may grow out of it.

  • Once a person suffering from ASPD reaches adulthood, it is much more difficult to treat. There are many behaviors and practices in which they have come accustomed that will take a lot of work to reverse.

  • There are many forms of ASPD. All of them have different symptoms and can lead to very different personalities.

There are many issues that may arise if Sociopathy goes untreated, including:
  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Substance abuse

  • Narcissism

Treatments for this disorder include a combination of medications, psychotherapy and even hospitalization. Managing ASPD is possible over time, and patients can go on to live a happy, healthy life free from debilitating symptoms.
