Raising teens today is not easy, for those who do it, I am not telling you anything you don’t already know. I live with two, eighteen years and sixteen years old. The eighteen year old is a girl, sixteen year old, boy. Trust me when I tell you they don’t always have their “Listening Ears” on. My wife and I have repeatedly pulled our hair out trying to get the simplest of tasks completed to help us out and make our day move along more smoothly. Getting their bedrooms cleaned, the dishwasher emptied, the trash out or the lawn mowed is sometimes like trying to get water from a stone. Who out there can relate!!
I have been told on more than one occasion that we are not being selfish, or to demanding of them, but, we are in fact teaching them responsibility, accountability, and organizational skills. My question has always been, “Why don’t they see it from our point of view?” And the response has always been, “Because they are teenagers! This is how they are and this is how you were!”
In all honesty, I can remember my parents raising their voice from time to time as well.
What is so frustrating is that living in the age of cell phones, blackberries and instant messages, speaking to one with instructions on what time to be home and they still stroll in when they decide to. Poor listening ears!
Now I could go on and on and I am sure so could some of you but it is time to break the cycle and stop going round and round. There is help out there and I am going to tell you exactly how to find it!!
