South America is appealing to people from all over the world, from every age group and
every ethnicity. More and more people are starting to realize that South America has more to offer than the average tourist hotspot….it inhabits some of the most amazing festivals, sights and wonders of the world!
Here is a light overview of why South America is worth your time, whether you’re traveling solo, with a partner or even a family. This continent is so diverse in every way that it truly has an abundance of things to offer any type of traveler!
Machu Picchu: There is a 4 day hike on an Inca built trail which climbs up and down a mountain, through cloud forests, through many different Inca ruins and finishes a the Lost City of Machu Picchu. The hike is well worth the cost for the things you see and experience, and not to mention the service and quality (and quantity) of food provided by the tour. If you are not able to do the 4-day hike, there is also a train that will take you directly to the Lost City on a day trip. This hike is, by far, one of the most amazing things I have ever experienced.
Salar De Uyuni: A 4 day tour of one of the worlds largest salt flats that also takes you though some of the most stark and stunning terrain that South America has to offer. This is done in a vehicle, so it’s not physically demanding in any way! Within these 4 days you will experience everything from salt flats to hot springs to geysers shooting boiling water out of the ground at an elevation of 4000 meters asl.
Patagonia: Patagonia occupies the southern most part of the continent and is amazingly diverse. Here you are able to see glaciers, ice capped mountains (extinct volcanoes), flat desert-like land, unique little towns nestled at the foot of a volcano and even shorelines of washed up ancient lava. You have many options in which you can experience this area: camping, cruising, hiking, ice-climbing, etc.
Argentinean Wineries: Argentina has heaps to offer but is widely known for its wine and food. Mendoza, in the north, produces a fair amount of internationally known wines. It’s worth spending at least 3 days here exploring the wineries, taking part in many activities offered (such as paragliding over the vineyards) and enjoying the typically relaxed and festive Argentinean lifestyle.
Iguaçu Falls: Straddling 3 countries (Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay) these falls are the largest in the world. You’ll need an entire day to explore the many viewpoints and areas of these incredible waterfalls. They are best viewed from Argentina. You’ll do a fair bit of walking to cover all of the amazing viewpoints. However, if you aren’t able to do the walking, the important sites are very accessible.
Don’t forget to investigate the many different festival dates (especially Carnival), local cuisines and beaches! It’s helpful to search each country individually to familiarize yourself with any precautions or required documents. But Go!!! There are endless opportunities waiting for you on this continent
