UNITED STATES, Jan 26 — As time goes by and we get older, our circumstances change, that can affect our needs and in turn affect the spaces we live in. s time goes by and we get older, our circumstances change, that can affect our needs and in turn affect the spaces we live in. When you move to a new house, when you get a new roommate, when you are expecting a new baby, and so forth. Every now and again we find ourselves in the situation where we need to make choices to get the most out of the space around us, while fulfilling the needs of everyone involved.
1. Prioritize Space can easily be wasted and it is important to prioritize the importance of your needs. Your main goal is to cater for the most important activities and then for the less important ones. For example; you have a relatively sized guest bedroom that is kept tidy and maintained like the local museum for the occasional visit, once every six months. You also have a very small and cramped little office and recently decided to start your own business, and work from home. Solution: Switch the two rooms around and create a comfortable, practical home office, and still have a small guest bedroom for that rare occasion.
2. Objectivity Approach your space objectively. Do not avoid the obvious. Weigh your space up to your needs. Do not simply except something as it is but search for something that satisfies your specific needs. For example; if you are looking to buy a new or bigger home, and you are not someone that enjoys spending time in the kitchen cooking, do you really need the big state-of-the-art kitchen? Maybe you should choose the house with the small, closed kitchen and the big living room that opens up, giving you a great view of the garden (because you’ve always enjoyed gardening and the outdoors).
3. Basics Consider the basics when it comes to planning your space. How much space do you have available and how many people are present? For example; if you are a person that takes your hobbies very seriously, how would you distribute the space to accommodate it? Maybe you would use the smaller bedroom in the house for the practice of your hobbies exclusively and let the two children share the bigger bedroom. Or let the children each have their own room and share another room in the house depending on the nature of your hobby.
These are all guidelines that will help you plan your space effectively and logically, and get the most out of what you have. Filling up a space with something you don’t need is just as ineffective as keeping a space open with no useful purpose. Prioritize between your activities, approach your space objectively, consider the basics, and get what you need out of the space that you have.
Change and redefine the spaces in your home to suit your lifestyle perfectly.
