Those stirring feelings and emotions can cloud your vision in making a thought-through decision in purchasing a puppy. There are numerous factors to consider in making the best decision in buying a puppy.
1. Commitment Buying a puppy is almost like making the decision to have children. It is a fifteen-year-plus commitment to care for another dependant being. This means more time and energy than simply giving the dog his food. It would mean having the time and patience to train the dog properly, taking the dog/puppy to routine vet visits, spend time playing with the puppy to get to know them and build up a companionship, etc. Maintaining a dog can also take a good deal of time, but can be great between the owner and pet – “Scratch a dog and you’ll find a permanent job”, Franklin P. 2. Finance “Providing for” and “taking care of”, unfortunately means spending money. The needs of a puppy/dog can become diverse when you truly consider all their needs and give them a lifestyle that “a man’s best friend” deserves. The basic level needs include items such as food, toys, bedding/housing (depending on whether your dog stays inside or outside your house), leads, collars, jerseys (if it is a cold area), etc. Routine vet visits are unavoidable if you want to ensure your puppy is healthy. If you are one of the owners that prefer taking your dog to the parlor on a weekly basis rather than maintaining them yourself, it could amount to a hefty price all-in-all.
3. Reason Consider the reason why you are getting a puppy. Are you truly looking for that companionship and you are a big dog-lover? Or are you just getting a new puppy to satisfy the children? They are cute after all… You cannot act on the wrong reasons, because it may cause you regret and frustration later on.
4. Lifestyle Consider your lifestyle before purchasing a puppy. If you are working most of the time, where will you find the time and energy to spend on the attention that your new puppy needs? Consider your accommodation and what the puppy actually needs. Will you have enough space for a dog with a high activity level? Also look at the suitability of the environment for your new puppy.
Spend some time weighing the pros and cons versus getting a puppy. Dogs are also living breathing entities just like children and therefore have similar requirements. Reacting hastily and on emotion can cause long-term problems for you and your pet. Having a pet that you don’t really want is communicating to your puppy/dog that their owner/parent does not want them. Make a knowledgeable decision and gain a trustworthy friend and companion for many years to come.
