UNITED STATES, Aug 05 — A variation of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Acute Stress Disorder is a high-anxiety syndrome characterized by major anxiety symptoms within a month of a traumatic event. In the field of health psychology, Acute Stress Disorder is a newer diagnostic term that was added into the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual in 1994 as a way to differentiate short-term anxiety responses from longer-term PTSD symptoms. People who suffer from acute stress often display these symptoms:     * The person walks around in a type of haze, completely disconnected from what is going on around them. Sometimes people benefit from group therapy, meditation or cognitive-behavioral therapy

A variation of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), acute stress disorder is a high-anxiety syndrome characterized by major anxiety symptoms within a month of a traumatic event. In the field of health psychology, Acute Stress Disorder is a newer diagnostic term that was added into the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual in 1994 as a way to differentiate short-term anxiety responses from longer-term PTSD symptoms.

People who suffer from acute stress often display these symptoms:

    * The person walks around in a type of haze, completely disconnected from what is going on around them.

    * He or she suffers from major anxiety or panic attacks that may be associated with an event or area in which a traumatic event took place.

    * The person may have extreme difficulty in concentrating.

    * He or she is suffering from at least one symptom of PTSD.

Physical symptoms include:

    * Insomnia

    * Panic

    * Restlessness

    * Hallucinations

    * Hypervigilance

    * Irritability

Living with the knowledge or having seen or experienced something that was traumatic can make everyday life rather difficult. Some people find that due to extreme trauma they will begin to block out specifics about the event, thus impairing their memory. This partial amnesia is actually rather common and is a sign of both PTSD as well as Acute Stress Disorder.

It is extremely difficult to try to work through the turmoil of emotions that follows a traumatic event. Some people are able to work through these emotions internally and simply move on with their life. Other people find that they begin to breakdown, and communication with anyone outside of themselves is restricted.

In the health psychology field, treatment for this disorder includes psychotherapy, medication or a combination of both. Sometimes people benefit from group therapy, meditation or cognitive-behavioral therapy. Some people work through their inner turmoil in a period of weeks and don’t require assistance, but it varies from person to person.

‘Traumatic memories are difficult to process and integrate, but it is extremely important to maintain a relationship with the underlying emotions that accompany the memory. If you avoid them or resist them then they simply go underground and become stronger. You have to learn how to "sit"with them rather like you would sit with a friend in pain. It is in that quality of being willing to be present that the healing and resolution take place.
