iring in syndication on Dish Network there is a movie review show entitled "At the Movies" that I have my DVR set to record (mostly because it airs at odd times like 6 A.M. in the Boston area). And now the show is making some drastic changes. It all started with in 1986 with “Siskel and Ebert & the Movies,” hosted by Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times and Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune. For many years, the two critics shared their opinions of newly released films and started the “two thumbs up/down” review summaries. During its original run with Siskel and Ebert the show was nominated for Primetime Emmy Awards seven times.
Sadly, in 1998, Gene Siskel was diagnosed with a brain tumor and in 1999, he announced he was taking a leave of absence for further treatment of the tumor. He hoped to return to the show but less than three weeks later, Siskel died from complications of the surgery. The last show that Siskel and Ebert hosted together aired on January 23, 1999. Ebert continued the show with a series of guest critics and the show was renamed “Roger Ebert & the Movies.” In a way, the guests were “auditioning” their chemistry with Roger Ebert to test if they could possibly become a permanent co-host.
Finally, Ebert named fellow Chicago Sun-Times columnist Richard Roeper as his new permanent co-host. The show’s name was officially changed to “Ebert & Roeper and the Movies.”In 2002, Ebert was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and underwent radiation treatments for tumors on his thyroid and a salivary gland while continuing to work. Complications led to an emergency operation in 2006. The show continued with guest hosts during his recuperation. Ebert recovered enough by October 2006 to resume writing published reviews on a limited basis and later made a few public appearances, but due to his difficulty speaking, he did not return to the show.
Chicago Tribune critic Michael Phillips was made Roeper’s permanent co-host, but that didn’t last long, and Disney-ABC Domestic Television decided to “take the show in a different direction.” Roeper could not reach an agreement, and he left the program. He was replaced with Ben Lyons (who is the son of film critic Jeffrey Lyons) and Ben Mankiewicz. The move was highly criticized. Most people felt that Lyons was not worthy of sitting in his seat, and the fact that he was only 27 led people to believe that he didn’t earn his place there and was simply there because he happened to be the son of another film critic.Critics believed Lyons’ taste in movies was poor and that he had no “integrity.”
He seemed to have trouble understanding the message of certain movies, and was also highly lambasted when he referred to the 2007 movie I Am Legend as “one of the greatest movies ever made.” Too often Lyons sounded as though he were dictating a blurb for an ad, rather than giving serious advice to whether or not someone should go see a particular movie. As an avid watcher of the show, I can attest to these criticisms. I never took Lyons reviews seriously, and he was particularly biased against horror movies. Rather than appreciate what a film was trying to do, he seemed as though he already decided which kinds of movies he didn’t like and was going to say he hated it no matter what. Now, in a move that should make the Lyons haters happy, both hosts have been fired. They will be replaced by the returning Michael Phillips and New York Times film critic A.O. Scott.
