B arcelona flaunts beauty that is simply breathtaking and awe-inspiring. Dotted with scenic sights offering vivacious vistas, Barcelona embodies progress and prosperity. Hustling and bustling with all the humdrum of life, this city is the heart of history and culture.

With tourists flocking to it in large numbers, Barcelona does not only extend a warm welcome to all the visitors but also fulfills all their expectations for a vacation. Home to some of the most striking remnants of the past and magnificent monuments, Barcelona’s history intrigues everyone and gives rise to curiosity.

Barcelona’s history:

Originally founded by Carthaginians and Phoenicians, the city was previously known as Barcino. Romans were the first ones to come to this area. Remains of this era are can be explored at the Plaza Del Rei and the renowned Gothic Quarter. I recommend visiting the Museum of History of Barcelona, MUHBA, located near Barcelona’s Cathedral. And by the way, I also recommend get accommodation in the old city in order to enjoy Barcelona’s main highlights within walking distance. Just check BarcelonaPoint.com for holiday apartments in this area.

Next, the Visigoths invaded the area, changing its name to Barcinona in the 5th century A.D. Next came the Moors who ruled the area for a century before the Franks conquered it again. This was the time when the Spanish Reconquest was initiated that later earned fame as Spanish Marches.
During the Spanish Marches, the area was segregated into a number of counties with the County of Barcelona being the most important of all. It was then in the year 998 that Count Borrel II gained freedom for the county from the Carolingian empire, hence expanding the city’s territory forming what is known as Catalonia today.

With Catalonia attached to the Crown of Aragon, Barcelona started losing power. In the years that followed, conflicts started to rise between Barcelona and Madrid. Barcelona was prohibited all trade from America in the 17th century.

At the same time Catalonia declared independence after an aggressive war with Spain. In this war for independence, Spain lost the areas of Roussillon and other parts of Catalonia. However, these regions were returned to Spain after the fall of the French empire.

The city of Barcelona started manifesting its importance during the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century. Hosting the World’s Fair in 1888, the city of Barcelona started emerging as a major tourist attraction in Spain. Exuding a raw charm, the city is engulfed in an ethereal beauty that never fails to strike chord with anyone.
