UNITED STATES, Nov 10 — If you glance through your music collection, chances are that you won’t find many women listed on the credits as engineers or producers. f you glance through your music collection, chances are that you won’t find many women listed on the credits as engineers or producers. In fact, if you go back to the earliest forms of recorded music, the 33’s, the 45’s, and even the 78’s, they are virtually non-existent. It is true that the music industry has a long history of being male-dominated, and was once somewhat of a “good ole boys club,” but this is changing.
Many women are discouraged from seeking careers in the music industry. They have the misconception that they must have singing or musical talent to be successful; that audio engineering or record producing is too hard and too technical, but this is simply not the case. If you are female, you don’t have to be Britney Spears or Madonna to be in the music business. There are many rewarding and fulfilling careers behind the scenes that are within reach to anyone with the knowledge and skills necessary.
At Mediatech Institute, experienced music industry professionals teach aspiring students all aspects of the recording industry. Students are trained in areas such as Audio Engineering, Studio Techniques, Producing and Songwriting, Audio for Television and Film, Live Sound Reinforcement, and the Business of Music. While the majority of audio engineers are male, the number of females attending Mediatech is increasing. “Every year we see more and more women signing up for classes who are determined to break the ‘sound barrier’. They are no longer intimidated by their male counterparts in this industry,” states Tracy Terrell, film producer and Vice President of Mediatech Institute. “Most have a firm focus on where they are going and come to seek the knowledge and to learn to speak the ‘language’ so they can go on to do things like develop their own record label, produce music videos, create a production company or studio, or produce their own music.”
One such female is twenty-six year old Lauren Bucherie, a 2009 graduate of MediaTech Institute in Austin, Texas. Originally from Las Vegas, Lauren had graduated from business school and wanted a career in the music industry. She soon realized that she would need more specific skills to succeed in the entertainment industry. While attending Mediatech, she met her business partner, CJ Vinson, and together they formed a production company called “The Sessions.” Lauren and CJ began throwing music showcases around Austin, filming music videos for bands and posting them to their website. The Sessions has filmed and recorded many national and international bands, including Fitz & the Tantrums, Angus and Julia Stone, and The Civil Wars, to name a few. Together the partners are now working on a TV pilot focusing on travel and music scenes in American cities.
Twenty-seven year old Dove Miller is a student at Mediatech’s newest location in Oceanside, California. Dove had a love for audio engineering at a young age because her father was an audio engineer. As an intern at a recording studio, she became fascinated with live sound. She currently has a hip hop album out and has toured independently throughout the U.S. but after experiencing problems with expressing her vision in studio, Dove says she decided to take a year off to attend Mediatech in order to learn the live audio and studio production techniques she needed to “take the power back.” Dove states, “The industry has traditionally been male dominated, and somewhat intimidating, but I want be able to discuss the world of film and music in-depth so I can produce my own music videos and documentaries. If you want to be a musician, you need to be able to convey your ideas properly if you are going to develop your art as you want. ”
The entertainment industry is exciting and lucrative, with countless career possibilities. Trained audio technicians are employed in many fields, not limited to the music business. Audio engineers are also needed for the production of radio and television shows, commercials, films, and many other areas. A rewarding job in the entertainment industry is not out of reach for anyone, as long as they have the knowledge and training necessary to succeed. You don’t have to be on stage to have a creative and fulfilling career in the fascinating world of entertainment, and you don’t have to be male. The glass ceiling has broken.
Mediatech Institute is one of the premier multimedia and recording arts programs in the nation with locations in Houston, Dallas, and Austin, Texas and Oceanside, California. For more information on careers in the entertainment industry go to www.mediatech.edu or call 866.498.1122.
