very country has its own unique culture, tradition and customs. In Spain, during late February, carnival celebration takes places in full swing. Just a week before the (traditional Christian fasting), there is wild partying all over Spain because the country plays host to one of the biggest and most exciting carnivals in Europe. Nobody knows where this carnival originates from.
Some districts in Barcelona hold their own events but you can catch big parades on streets like Passeig de Gracia, Rambla de Guipuzcoa, Las Ramblas and many more; beside private parties and clubs. This year the Carnival will be from February 16th till 22nd. And if you especially want to visit the carnival of Barcelona, do not miss a visit to the Carnival parades and events in the nearby and colorful Mediterranean town of Sitges!
The word carnival derives from the phrase ‘farewell to the flesh’ so many people think that it is in reference to the overload indulgence that takes place before the somber Lent. Others believe that it is related to the Roman solstice festival called Saturnalia in which people celebrated by dancing and drinking. One of the reasons people believe that Saturnalia is related to Carnival is because in this solstice festival, parade floats were made called the Carrus Navalis.
Today the carnival is one of the most celebrated events in Spain nationwide. Barcelona also celebrates the carnival with exuberance and energy. According to history, the first Carnival in Barcelona was held in 1333! This tradition might have stopped in Spain if a dictatorship government had lasted there. In fact during the reign of General Franco, the carnival was banned for around forty years. However as soon as a democratic government came into existence in Spain, the carnival celebration was reintroduced by the Office of Festivities and Traditions called Culture Area.
Over the years, the duty of organizing the carnival has been passed down to the Civic Committee of Carnival in Barcelona. The committee was created by the Department of Citizen Relations and the Municipal Institute of Education and Markets. Its main responsibility is to bring together all the projects from various associations and organizations and combine it into one big special project for the carnival in Barcelona. And by the way, if you are looking for accommodation in the city I recommend BarcelonaPoint.com to find good deals.
What is so amazing about this carnival? It is an event of colorful parades and people dressed up in extravagant and vibrant costumes. There is loud music with large crowds, all enjoying their hearts out. The main event of this carnival is called Rua. It is a parade held in the honor for the King Carnival.
