Many celebs also gain more fame than they bargain for and end up attracting the wrong fans- stalkers. Most of us remember that horrible incident when a desperate fan of Paula Abdul’s committed suicide right in front of her house. The fan was once a contestant on American Idol. According to psychologist James Houran, many crazed stalkers did not necessarily start off as obsessed as you’d think.
He claims that stalkers are usually part of a simple online fan club but their love for that particular celebrity grows and becomes more and more dysfunctional as it interferes with their lives on a daily basis. He states that there can be a stalker in any of us, which I find difficult to believe. There is also a large amount of information available online for fans to learn almost anything about that person. Many famous people choose to blog on Twitter and give fans live updates on what they’re doing. Fans can become obsessed with the immediacy of Twitter updates. This easy access to information has lead to a rise in crazed fans and potential stalkers! Forensic psychologist Meloy who was placed on Gweneth Paltrow’s stalker case states that many celebrity stalkers are psychotic, implying that the obsessed person has more deep seeded emotional problems than Houran claims.
Meloy stated that the tabloids and other media do not help the fact that this unstable person already has a fixation on the celebrity. Paltrow was stalked years ago by 49 year-old Dante Soiu who was committed to a psychiatric hospital in 2000. Famous American Idol and radio host Ryan Seacrest has recently been in headlines because he was stalked by 25 year-old Chidi Benjamin Uzomah. Chidi refused to follow the court order issued to him in September when he tried to fight his way through Ryan’s security guard and continued to spy on the celeb. He was caught and thrown in cuffs last week right at the E! Entertainment building where Ryan’s TV show was being filmed. Justin Timberlake recently took out a restraining order against a 48 year-old homeless woman who entered his property three times in one week.
The woman was also charged in the past with stalking Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses who she once claimed was her husband. A 53 year-old man was told by police to stay away from 16 year-old Miley Cyrus when he tried again to visit her on the set of a movie she was making. He specifically asked the security guards if they had seen her and started banging on doors and calling her name. The man claimed that he and Miley were engaged and she sent him secret messages via her television show. He supposedly sent her diamond rings and believed that the two were secretly getting married. This stalking is particularly concerning considering Miley’s young age.
The sad part about the whole thing is the fact that McLeod was only sentence to 2 years probation and a psych evaluation after his claims of being her fiancé and head butting security guards. Madonna had a stalker who was constantly sending horrible letters of a graphic sexual nature to her London home. She was open about fearing for her life as she admits she felt like she would be shot “like John Lennon”. Madonna has experienced many stalkers throughout her days as a superstar.
The most bizarre would probably be when she had to cancel three concerts because of terrorist threats. John Hinckley Jr. attempted to assassinate Reagan for the sole purpose of impressing Jodie Foster. Huh? He figured it would give him celebrity status and get her attention after several unsuccessful attempts to talk to her and slipping letters under her door at Yale University. He is hospitalized but he’s allowed to leave the hospital to visit his home with the supervision of his parents. Poor Jodie Foster.
Yet another person was obsessed with her. You’d think this would make her crazy but she kept trucking. Michael Smegal was arrested in my home state of Massachusetts in 2008 for stalking Jodie (how lovely). He was captured because he mailed a bomb threat to L.A. airports thinking that they held offices for the Screen Actors’ Guild that previously made some uncomplimentary comments about Jodie. He called her Jodie Foster S. in the letters. He was arrested when a federal agent tracked him down after he sent mail to Foster.
