UNITED STATES, Aug 26 — As many people eagerly await the implementation of the Health care reform act, which is hoped to provide over 30 million more Americans with access to affordable health insurance, recently released census data reveals which states are likely to feel the greatest impact of the law. Under the new legislation, just about all Americans will have to purchase health care insurance by 2014 or pay penalties, which will be accessed via taxes The law which was passed after furious debate and partisan rancor is targeted primarily at people who do not have access to affordable health insurance through their workplace, or because they are out of work or are self-employed. The data, which was released in July of 2010, is from the ’07 Census, and it reveals geographic disparities across the country as regards those who do, and those who do not have health insurance. By contrast, Texas counties again led with the highest levels of any county in the country, with 14 of the 20 counties nationwide with the highest number of uninsured all in Texas, and with the number one county in the country at nearly 50% of population uninsured, being Kennedy County, Texas

Not surprisingly, the state with the least number of uninsured is Massachusetts, which has now achieved nearly universal health insurance coverage. Back in 2007, according to the Census, Massachusetts had only 7.8% of the population under 65 without health insurance. Interestingly enough the mandatory health insurance provision of the Health care Reform Act very much mirrors Massachusetts’ plan, and entities like that states Common Wealth Connector, which helps residents to facilitate finding affordable health insurance, will be set up in every state come 2014.

It also comes as little surprise that the areas in the country that have the most people struggling without access to affordable health coverage are in the rural South, with West Texas posting the highest percentage of residents without health insurance at almost 27%.

When looking at the data on the county level, the gaps are the same geographically and even greater. For example once again the county with the least amount of uninsured is Plymouth, Massachusetts with only about 6% of that county’s residents under 65 reporting they are without health insurance. By contrast, Texas counties again led with the highest levels of any county in the country, with 14 of the 20 counties nationwide with the highest number of uninsured all in Texas, and with the number one county in the country at nearly 50% of population uninsured, being Kennedy County, Texas.

Note this data does not take into account the rampant unemployment that has taken place over the course of the recession since 2007, but it is still an accurate reflection of the geographic disbursements of the "haves" and "have-nots" when it comes to affordable health insurance.
