Dell isn`t normally top of the class when it comes to design, but the new Adamo, with its razor-sharp lines and flouncy advertising, changes that. Aimed squarely at the same demographic as Apple`s MacBook Air.
It`s clad in brushed aluminium in a choice of pearl ( off –white ) and onyx ( not very black ). It`s less than 20mm fat and weighs just 1.8kg, that`s half a kilo heavier than the Air. But, still hardly hefty and it has a much more substantial feel to it.
The Adamo`s Business Class looks are supported by a reasonable selection of ports. There are there USBs, including one that doubles as a high-speed eSATA, a display port and audio out. A 13.4 inch, LED-backlit widescreen display continues the overall luxury feel.
The Adamo`s not the fastest around, with a Core 2 Duo U9300 ULV ( ultra-low voltage ) processor and 2GB of RAM, not quite enough to propel Vista at speed. The relatively BioShock 2 in between brainstorms.
The 128GB solid state hard drive is an impressive flourish, though, with more than enough shockproof, fast-access storage for your day to day office tasks. The Adamo also packs Wi-Fi N, Bluetooth and can run for more than four hours on a single charge, making it an excellent travel companion. It ships with Microsoft Vista Home 64-bit built in too.
We never thought we`d end up saying this when comparing a Dell to an Apple, but while the Adamo lags just behind for performance. It trounces the MacBook for aesthetics. If you like business not as usual, it`s a great choice.
