Cloud computing is an internet-based computing, wherefrom resources such as software, information or tools can be shared and accessed by the end user. The term ‘Cloud’ is used in similarity with the ‘cloud’ symbol used in data flow or flow charts to represent the Internet.
The resources are stored in interconnected remote servers to deliver the demanded service. The services of cloud computing are available on-demand without any requirement of installing software/hardware on the user’s system, while running such applications. To take an example from our day-today internet life, Yahoo and Google are active and live icons of cloud computing. While you as the end user, avail the services of these providers (email, office suite applications, Picasa, flickr etc) it is not necessary you have the technical know-how of these software, abstracted in the Internet Cloud. For instance while using Google or yahoo mail, you are just in touch with the interface, the navigation through it and the resultant functionality and not the process of sending and receiving mail. To exemplify further, web-albums sponsored by these cloud service providers are again a feature of cloud application, where you create your own album personalize it with your photos etc .
Cloud Computing advances centralized control, security and management of data resources. Additionally all resources ‘affiliated’ to the cloud are scalable as per your system requirement and configuration. So, there is less of what you have to do as much is already done and hidden!
Cloud computing can be classified as applications, platform and infrastructure. In the cloud application s segment, the cloud delivers Software as a Service function (SaAs), where you as the user of cloud software can run or execute the application on your system without the need to install it or tend to its maintenance or support. Platform as a service (PaAs) or Cloud Platform services provide an environment for running cloud applications and maintaining them.
Such services tide over the cost and effort of buying and installing the necessary hardware/software to deploy these applications. And, if you want computer infrastructure in the way of servers, network equipments, software, Cloud Infrastructure computing(IaAs) comes into the picture, where you simply pay for what you use as an outsourced service. With all its utility services, the ‘cloud’ is yet to take shape in the other two segments (platform and infrastructure) with reinforced security features, as it uses the public internet space. But this would probably be just a time-zone away considering technology’s fast-paced up-scaling.
Cloud Computing has come a long way since its genesis in the 1960’s and much in vogue with the current Internet trends. The web is its platform, and web-enabled applications are the ‘cloud-pullers’ (for resources software etc) .
