UNITED STATES, Mar 29 — When it comes to decorating a room it helps to start with a focal point. If done correctly, it can help make the room feel inviting, become the anchor for the furniture and seating groups and give inhabitants in the room something to draw and occupy their eye. hen it comes to decorating a room it helps to start with a focal point. If done correctly, it can help make the room feel inviting, become the anchor for the furniture and seating groups and give inhabitants in the room something to draw and occupy their eye. Without a focal point in a room furniture can often seem to be floating in an empty space. Sometimes you get lucky and the room you are decorating already has a focal point. It might be a fireplace, some built-in shelves or just a large window overlooking a garden. In these cases, you would just emphasize the focal point and design your room around it. But what if your room is a big blank space with nothing to catch the eye? Perhaps it has a large expanse of wall space with very few windows or doors. In this case, the easiest way to start creating your focal point is to choose a distinctive piece of art work. It can be a piece of wall art, a sculptural piece of wall décor, a textural piece of tapestry or an interesting framed mirror.
Your style and color preference will dictate what you choose.
Since you will be choosing this artwork to be the focus of the room, it can also serve as your inspiration piece. Basing your fabric and color choices off of this artwork will help give the room a cohesive look and help reinforce the impact of your focal artwork.
Once you have your artwork chosen, consider how to enhance it with lighting. Here your choices will be influenced by logistics, expense and difficulty of installation. But lighting can have a major impact on style and mood of the room. If you are able to hire an electrician, you might consider installing Track Lighting. There are an expansive amount of custom systems available. But you might also consider pre-packaged monorail systems that could be used to enhance both your focal point artwork and the immediate area.
These pre-packaged monorail systems give you the flexibility of being able to position the track heads and direct the beam where it might be needed most and come packaged all in one box. Another type of lighting to consider for you room focal point is the wall sconce. Flanking your artwork with two wall sconce fixtures will enhance the room’s focal point and give the room a different feeling in the evening. As most wall sconces require being hardwired to a junction box, you have to consider the expense of hiring an electrician and the location of the wiring to install the fixtures.
Fortunately, with the increased availability of energy saving LED lighting, stylish battery wall sconces are becoming more available. If hard wiring a wall sconce fixtures on the wall is just not feasible, you might consider plug-in sconces. There are many styles available and only require a standard electrical outlet to operate. Many of these type of sconces also include cord covers to hide the plug-in cord. If you want to light just your artwork and not your surrounding space you can use picture lighting. These fixtures mount either on the frame of the artwork or on the wall above the artwork. They are available in both hard wire and plug-in. Check the product specifications carefully before purchasing to ensure you order the type you need. So you can see that with combining just one or two pieces on your wall you can create a unique focal point on your wall and really define your personal style. Your options are limitless.
