Do We Still Need To Observe The Sabbath?

S o far, we have discussed the first, second, and the third commandment.  We will now discuss the fourth, the last commandment in the first tablet of the 10 Commandments.  It is written in Exodus 20:8 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.  This is reinforced in Exodus 35:2 Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.

Let me repeat what God said:  “whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.”  No wonder why we get sick, get old, and die, because we take for granted the day that God blessed and sanctified, and we have the courage to say we love God. Two-thirds of people in the world say it is Sunday, some say Saturday, and others say Friday.  So which is which?  Try this.  Sabbath is Shabbath in Hebrew meaning rest; Sabbaton in Greek; and Sabbatum in Latin. This day falls on the 7th day of the week.  The 7th day in our Gregorian calendar now is Saturday.  Saturday is Samedi in French; Sabato in Italian; Sabbatum in Latin; and Sabado in Spanish.  It does not look like Sunday and Friday originated from the original Sabbath.  The etymology of Saturday really traces back to the original 7th day called the Sabbath.

So, Sabbath should be Saturday then.  Why then should a great number of God believers rest and worship on Sunday?  Can we blame them because it is their church telling them that Sabbath should be Sunday?  If you really love God you should find out what God wants and if it matches your church‘s commands then fine.  What if it they do not match? These churches are supposed to lead people to Salvation.  For example, Emperor Constantine decreed in the year 321 that the Sabbath should be changed from Saturday to Sunday.  We can only imagine what would happen to violators of that decree during the years that immediately followed.   The Christians during that time became like the slaves in Egypt who were not allowed to rest on the Sabbath.

The following verses in the New Testament have been cited by those who believe that the Sabbath had been changed to the first day of the week: Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:2; Luke 24:1; John 20:1.  They believe that these verses tell us that the Lord resurrected on the first day of the week, therefore, was changing the significance of the Sabbath from the seventh day (Saturday) to the first day (Sunday).  However, these verses are only telling us that it was on the first day of the week that the followers of Jesus came to visit His remains and they did not find Him there for He had already risen.  The verses do not tell us that the Lord rose from the dead on that first day.  The disciples did not see Jesus rise on that day.  Not finding the remains on that first day does not necessarily mean Jesus rose on that same day.  Even then, assuming Jesus rose from the dead on Sunday that does not mean Sabbath is Sunday and not Saturday.

Did Jesus abrogate the Sabbath?  Many Bible scholars and teachers believe so.  Let us find out from the very verses cited to support this belief: Matthew 28:1, 9, 10; Mark 16:9; Luke 24:1, 13, 15; John 20:19, 26; Matthew 28:1, 9, 10; Mark 16:9; Luke 24:1, 13, 15; John 20:19, 26.  These verses tell us that every time Jesus reappeared it was always on the first day not the Sabbath.  So, it is argued that this means that Jesus is sanctifying the first day instead of the Sabbath.  Jesus did not say anything like that in any of these verses.  On the contrary, this should be telling us that Jesus is observing the Sabbath that is why He is seeing His disciples on the next day.

Colossians 2:14 says, “by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.”  What is being cancelled here?  Is it the law that is being cancelled here or the consequence of transgressing the law?  Let us apply this verse to the violation of the Sabbath law.  This verse does not speak of cancelling the Sabbath law.  It is cancelling the consequence of violating the Sabbath law which is death. Every time we disobey the Sabbath law the consequence of death is recorded.  It is this record of death that is cancelled, set aside and nailed to the cross because Jesus died instead of us.  The Sabbath law remains to be followed if we really believed in Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath.

Colossians 2:16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath.  17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.   These verses cannot be taken as cancelling the fourth Commandment. These verses are within the context of Matthew 12:1-13 where the Scribes were trying to use the Sabbath law against Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath.   They accused Jesus of violating the Sabbath by allowing his disciples to eat and by healing a man with a withered hand.   That means the Scribes who pretend to observe the fourth Commandment glorify the rituals and ceremony more than the kindness of feeding the hungry and healing the sick.  Colossians 2:16 does not apply to those who observe the fourth Commandment with all their heart, Mind, soul and strength.  This is the real meaning of the phrase “the substance belongs to Christ.”  If you accept Christ as your savior, “substance” becomes you and you will be able to do away with the hypocrisy of the old believers.  You will not anymore be subject to the Sabbath law because observance of the Sabbath becomes natural to you and you will not be able to break or violate it.

There are church leaders and teachers who would say that the Sabbath was given to the Jews but not to the Christians.  How come?  Jesus was a Jew and He said:  (Mark 2:27) “. . . . . The Sabbath was made for man…”  He did not say for the Jews or for His people Israel but for man.   Exodus 31:17 says: “. . . It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever. . . .”  However, Jesus redefined the word Israelite in John 1:47 saying, “Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile.”  This means that even if you are an Israelite by race or blood but have deceit in you the definition does not apply to you.  The definition applies to those who are guileless.  Furthermore, it must be noted that Exodus 31:17 says forever, that means until now and hereafter.

It is very plain to see that those who teach that the Sabbath does not apply to Christians are leading people toward death, not everlasting life with Christ.  It is still a matter of personal choice though.  If you do not want to identify yourself with the sign between God and His people, so be it.  That will mean you do not love your God.   It is death that you love (Proverbs 8:36).
