Make sure to check your chosen host in regard with the below criteria.
1. CUSTOMER SERVICE/SUPPORT. E-mail communication is the pillar of communication for many businesses. If this is the case for your company too then you should make sure it is reliable. And in case it is down the customer service or support will be there to help you have your business e-mail up and running as soon as possible. A major interruption of e-mail communication can seriously jeopardize your business. So it is good to know your host can cover your back if needed. Before you decide to go for a provider, ask web designers that you know, other users of this host that you might give you some feedback, contact the support yourself and ask questions how they operate: Do they operate 24/7? What are their working hours? How long do they take to respond to a query?
2. POOR ANTI-SPAM FILTERS. This can be a nightmare. If you are used to using private e-mails from global providers with great resources and technology you might be disappointed when your e-mail is hosted by a small host. You might observe spam sneaking into your professional mailbox every day. It is a great loss of time to delete it manually all the time. You can ask your potential host what kind of spam blockers they offer. A post factum solution (which I have adopted) is to install yourself one of good spam blockers on your e-mail client. The spam blockers will filter out spam that get’s through the hosts filters.
3. INTERFACE OF ONLINE MAILBOX. Some smaller hosts seem to assume you will not check mail online ever using their interface. And the interfaces tend to be lousy and offer very limited text editing options, and no possibility to insert a signature etc. But if you pay for this service you might want to actually use the online access directly (not through some other account to which you can forward your business e-mails). See what text editing options it offers (often very limited). What is the font in which you can send your e-mail from the online interface (sometimes it is just one default font)? Ask about demo version. If you can, test the online access to e-mails before buying.
4. PRICE. It is actually not e generic drawback. However, review offers of several hosts to avoid choosing the most expensive host which offers actually poor value for money. It’s worth asking around web designers who should give you relevant information.
