arcelona is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in Spain at any time of the year, but it truly comes alive during the period of Easter. Easter is a very special time in the whole of Spain and it is one of the most celebrated occasions all over the country. Any visitor to Barcelona during this period in the year can expect to experience a busy pace of life with many special events and with every inhabitant of the city getting involved in the celebrations.
The dates of the Semana Santa vary from year to year but it essentially runs from Palm Sunday right through until Easter Monday, this year 2011 holy week is from Sunday 17th to Monday 25th of April. So if your planning Easter holidays in Barcelona, I recommend you to book accommodation in advance, at Barcelona point.com, because the city receives a large number of visitors during these dates.
Known as "Semana Santa" which means "Holy Week" in English, the people of Barcelona, and indeed the whole of Spain, celebrate the last week that Jesus Christ was alive on the Earth. This celebration has deep roots and is thought to have started as far back as the Medieval period, although celebrations during this week can be traced back as far as the 3rd century in parts of Europe.
Barcelona is one of many large cities in Spain that holds elaborate events to celebrate Semana Santa. Although many people would say that cities such as Seville host larger, more elaborate Holy Week events, Barcelona can more than hold its own with their proceedings.
The mainstay of the celebrations in Barcelona during the Easter period is the processions that take please in the Gothic Quarters on holy Friday 22nd. These are bright, colorful events with music, floats and decorations making their way through the city streets. There are around six processions held in Barcelona in the various neighborhoods of the city and all are organized by a group of people known as "Cofradia". These groups are ordinary people: can be men or women, and have to have the blessing of the church to be able to carry out their Holy Week duties.
The processions themselves are a joy to watch in Barcelona and visitors can join the city’s residents to watch the participants make their way through the streets. The floats (known as pasos in Spain) are highly decorated and can contain several different figures and symbols on top. This could be Christ carrying the cross or even mounted upon the cross. Other important figures that feature frequently on the floats are The Virgin Mary, Saint Peter and even Pontius Pilot.
Usually following the floats are men and boys who are known as "Nazarenos" who are dressed in long tunics with pointed masks. Following the Nazarenos are the "Penitentes" who may be carrying crosses on their shoulders, have a ball and chain on their ankles or are wearing shackles.
Visitors on an Easter holiday in Barcelona can expect to see a variety of processions with a different one being held on different days of Holy Week. There are also special concerts that usually accompany the events of Semana Santa and there is a general feeling of excitement, joy and business.
