AUSTRIA, Dec 07 — There are quite a few crucial differences between the East Midlands and the West Midlands. One of the most prominent differences concerns social deprivation and unemployment rates. While the East Midlands have a more stable economy and fewer problems concerning unemployment the West Midlands are in a similar situation as the North of England, with high unemployment rates as well as more socially deprived cities than the other way around. here are quite a few crucial differences between the East Midlands and the West Midlands. One of the most prominent differences concerns social deprivation and unemployment rates. While the East Midlands have a more stable economy and fewer problems concerning unemployment the West Midlands are in a similar situation as the North of England, with high unemployment rates as well as more socially deprived cities than the other way around.
Part of this can be explained by the north-south-divide which runs throughout the East Midlands. Economically speaking areas south of this divide and all of Lincolnshire are considered to be part of Southern England, which is richer and more prosperous than the North. The East Midlands as a whole is less deprived than the West Midlands or anywhere in the North of England. By measurement it has more in common with the South of England, but it is not quite as affluent. It’s economy is closest to South West England while the West Midlands are more like Northern England.
In March 2011 the average unemployment count for the region was 3,6%. The highest with 5,8% each were Nottingham and Leicester and the lowest with 1,4% each were Rutland and South Northhamptonshire. The West Midlands on the other hand had an average unemployment rate of 4,7%. This was the second highest overall unemployment count in England, only second to North East England.
The highest in the region with 7,7% was Wolverhampton, this was the joint second highest unemployment rate in England together with Manchester. Wolverhampton was followed by Sandwell with 7,1% and Birmingham with 7,0%. The lowest rate in the region was one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, Stratford-on-Avon with 1,6%, which relies on tourism as it’s primary source of income.
