E ngineering in general tends to focus on the practical design, build and implementation of systems, technologies, tools, machinery and devices. The two most common specializations in engineering today are those of Electrical engineering and mechanical engineering

The oldest of these two professions would be mechanical engineering. The word ’mechanical’ indicates just how broad elements are that such as engineer may draw on. The engineer could draw on knowledge relating to scientific mechanisms such as kinetics or thermodynamics or physical attributes such as structural analysis and materials. He or she will also often apply these principles when working with the design and installation of machinery, components and tools.

Electrical Engineering focuses on Energy Systems installation and control. So the general skill-set would include elements of control systems, power supply and management, electronics, telecommunications, semiconductors and signal processing. Many of the principles of electrical engineering are vital for the applications of mechanical engineering so it is not uncommon for there to be some overlap in the industry.

Many specializations would occur within both Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Electrical Engineers would frequently specialize in one or more energy types such as renewable energies (wind, solar, geothermal), nuclear, gas energy or fuel cell technologies, to name a few. A mechanical engineer might specialize in the computer-aided design and prototyping or might specialize in installing a system for a niche such as manufacturing or processing within a particular industry.

Depending on their specialization engineers would work in as a direct consultant to a specific industry, as an employee within a larger organization or as part of an engineering firm’s team. There are many electrical contractors and mechanical contractors out there (firms and individuals) because the project time lines of engineering projects often require specialized knowledge for short to medium periods rather than full-time expertise.

Mechanical contractors and electrical contractors will often need to work together on commercial and industrial projects and this is particularly true of facilities upgrades and the construction of new industrial buildings. For instance: when a manufacturing plant is built the mechanical contractor would consult on features relating to the process control machinery and instrumentation including customizing the component installations to suit the facility requirement.  The electrical contractor would then approve and install the energy control system as well as its related cabling, circuitry and safety requirements. Data control, information technology installations would most likely involve the electrical contractor mostly but would sometimes require input from the mechanical specialist to ensure smooth integration with the process control system.

The ability to collaborate and solve complex technical issues within strict deadlines is essential for any engineer. Common themes in modern practice are driving towards combining energy efficiency in relation to the size of machines and devices. This rings true whether you are dealing with individual products, vehicles or buildings. The overlap of skills is becoming more common and it is likely that any person wishing to pursue a career in Engineering will need to combine their skills in innovation with strong interpersonal communication skills to get to the top of their game.
