It’s true; we’ve had an affinity for animal skin since forever. The joy of animal skin is that its tough, its warm and it lasts for a long time; but that doesn’t mean that you can get away from taking care of it. Leather needs to be cared for just like any other material, just not in the same manner.
Here are a few tips to increase the life span of your leather jacket:
Firstly, try and clean your leather jacket as much as possible at home. The material of your leather is an important factor to determine the cleaning style. For example, if you are using a smooth leather jacket made of lamb leather, simply take a soft damp cloth or a slightly wet sponge and wipe it across the jacket. This will remove all the dust and soil. For the more stubborn stains, I suggest you make use of saddle soap or a very mild detergent.
Warning: check if your leather jacket has a finish as water beads or spots on unfinished leather, spoiling it. Just damp the leather a tiny bit and check to see if the water beads.
Suede leather tends to attract dust a little more easily. Just clean it off with fine sandpaper or a suede brush.
Once you are done with brushing and dusting of your leather jacket, take some baby powder and sprinkle it on your jacket. Then take a soft dry cloth and rub the powder all over the jacket. This will close up all the pores and the sheen will be clearly visible.
In case your leather jacket has become all wrinkled, a simple method is to hang your jacket in the bathroom, when you are taking a hot shower. The steam will automatically iron out all the crinkles. If that does not work, don’t panic. What you need to do is layer your leather jacket with clean brown paper and gently iron over it.
Never store your leather in a plastic bad. It is made of natural skin, is porous and hence needs to breathe. Never use moth balls around your leather jacket.
A great way to waterproof your jacket is by rubbing it down with silicone spray or mink oil. Ensure that you first test it on a small patch on the underside of your jacket. Your leather may darken as a result of this.
If you’re looking to dry up your leather jacket, never do so in the sunlight. Instead, spread it out on a flat surface, or hang it from a padded or wooden hanger, at room temperature and let it dry itself out.
If the stains are too stubborn, you can choose to send it for professional cleaning. It’s a better and safer option. Just remember, not to do so too regularly since the natural dye and color wears off, especially for lighter jackets.
