lea and tick problems in dogs or cats can be a huge problem. Often times it can be as much of a headache for you as it is for your poor dog or cat. A flea has a life cycle of about one to two months in optimum conditions. They tend to like heat and humidity at or over 70 percent. Typically about fifty percent of the fleas on your dog or cat are eggs. A female flea can lay anywhere from fifteen to twenty eggs per day. That is a staggering figure. Imagine if your pet has just 100 female fleas that is laying eggs. If you were to put off taking care of your beloved dog or cat, for just one week that would be a total of roughly an extra 10,500 more fleas on your pet!
Fleas can cause many problems for your dog. First they like to suck the blood and use that as their food. Many times the flea’s bites can cause all kinds of health problems and issues in their host. Some of the more common health problems caused by fleas are:
- Flea Allergy Dermatitis which are basic skin infections infecting the upper layers of skin - Seborrhea which is yellow patches or scaling of skin - Hair or Fur loss - A severe and localized skin infection that can ooze - Diffuse Erythema - Anemia - When a flea bites it's host or victim it will swallow a tiny part of the blood of the host. If a very small puppy is infested with thousands of fleas the result could be death. - Tapeworm or Dipylidium Caninum. This type of tapeworm actually uses the flea as its own host and lays its own eggs near where the fleas reside. When a dog chews or bites the infected area in order to itch or scratch himself he could be ingesting tapeworms that can then reside inside the dogs blood and digestive tract causing a host of other digestive diseases.
Here are some simple tips you can do daily to get rid of fleas from your house, carpet and pets.
- You should vacuum regularly or even daily as necessary. - Wash your dogs bed in hot water as often as possible. - Keep your pet indoors as much as possible. - Change and wash their linens that they use to sleep on every few days. - Wash your dog regularly at least once a week - Use household flea products such as flea combs, flea shampoos, flea traps, flea medicine and vitamins and supplements that can help in flea prevention and flea control. - Some plants have been known to help with flea prevention like Lavender, Mint and Eucalyptus. - Last and most importantly, see a vet about your problem. He will recommend other simple tips and ideas to help in dealing with fleas and ticks in your house.
Here are some tips to help prevent flea bites Because of the lifecycle of fleas and the tenacity, getting rid of them can take time. When you are working on getting rid of fleas or ticks from using your pet as their host, a lot of times they can then go elsewhere like your carpet or clothes and in your couch and blankets and more. The key to getting rid of them is persistence. They will test your level of persistence and patience. If you stick with a good flea prevention plan you can win the battle. Flea control is huge for your health as well as the health of your dog.
So here are some tips for good flea control:
- Wear socks. Generally fleas can only jump about a foot into the air and since they are now living in your carpet they will attack and bite your ankles and lower legs. - During this time don't let your dog sleep in your bed at night. - Wash your bedding in hot water regularly to kill any larvae, eggs and fleas that may be hibernating during the colder months. - Apply lotions to your legs or flea bites to help with the scratching and itching that comes with these bites. - Eat a more alkaline diet (more salad greens) as this will affect your blood. Also garlic, onion and cayenne pepper seem to help as well.
