UNITED STATES, Apr 29 — It’s Monday morning and you’re forced to face your closet again to get ready for the start of another work week. You have a staff meeting and you were thinking of wearing your pink sweater and a pair of tan slacks but you think you might have worn them to the last one. t’s Monday morning and you’re forced to face your closet again to get ready for the start of another work week. You have a staff meeting and you were thinking of wearing your pink sweater and a pair of tan slacks but you think you might have worn them to the last one. You can’t help but think about the well-dressed women in your office who always look so put together at these meetings. There’s no way they feel this way when they look in their closet. You feel like a mess! You don’t know what goes together and when you really think about it, you don’t really even like most of the clothes you own.
Your mind drifts to a world of fantasy where you have a closet full of clothes you feel good and look great in. A world where you never stand in front of the mirror feeling frustrated again…
Do you ever stop and wonder why you continue to throw your hard-earned money away on clothing you never wear? I once did a Closet Detox with a woman who had 20 pairs of white pants. White denim, white cotton, white linen and so on and so forth and the problem was neither all that white nor all those pants, but the fact that she only ever wore one of two pairs. She knew she didn’t need another pair of white pants but she kept buying them anyway.
This client’s behavior was consistent with Pareto’s 80/20 Rule which states 80% of women only wear 20% of what’s hanging in their closet. I personally believe that ratio is closer to 90/10 based on some informal polls I’ve personally conducted among women, but in any case, unless you can identify the reason why you buy the things you do, you’re likely to continue wasting money on clothing you’ll never wear, for the rest of your life.
Cleaning out your closet is about more than freeing up space.
Obviously, the onset of spring is a common impetus for most of us to clean out our closets but there’s more to it than a change in seasons. It’s about saving money (learning how not to waste money) AND discovering your very own personal style breakthroughs! Lurking there behind your closet door is one or more style breakthroughs, each worth thousands of dollars.
Seeing all those white pants was a wake up call for my client. She didn’t know why she couldn’t pass a pair of white pants without buying them even though she always kept going back to the same two pair.
I was able to recognize the pattern for her. White was her favorite wardrobe color and she loved wearing white pants. Yes she liked white pants, but she only liked stark WHITE pants – pristine hospital white. Other shades looked dingy to her but she didn’t know that until I pointed it out. She just enjoyed buying white. Talk about a style breakthrough! Not only did she learn what to/not to buy, but this was going to add up to huge savings for her! I was then able to teach her my two favorite shopping mantras:
“I will never…”
“I will always look for…”
While shopping, my client now always tells herself, “I will never buy off white pants” and “I will always look for hospital white pants.” My client kept shaking her head at the money she wasted on all those white pants she never wore. Many of them were impulse buys off the discount rack because like many women, she just couldn’t pass up a bargain. It’s no coincidence, though, that the two pair of pants she kept turning to was the more expensive in her collection.
She thought she was saving money by picking up discount items but she was actually throwing money away, something none of us wants to be doing during these tough economic times.
Buying a piece of clothing because it’s on sale does not mean it saves you money. It’s all about CPW or “cost per wearing.”
What does “cost per wearing” mean?
When you determine how much a piece of clothing cost and how many times you wore it during a particular time frame, you end up with a basic formula of cost per wearing. This doesn’t apply to special occasion items such as a little black dress. It’s only intended for everyday wardrobe pieces.
If you have 10 shirts in your closet that you got off the discount rack for $15 each, you have $150 worth of shirts. If you wore each of them once in a year’s time before deciding you hate them, they each cost you $15 per wearing.
Now if you have one shirt you splurged on for $100 but you’ve worn it fifty times in a year, it cost you only $2 per wearing.
Essentially, if you bought all those shirts on sale to save money, passing up the more expensive items that you really, really wanted…you have not saved anything. You should have just skipped the discount items and invested in a piece you’d wear over and over again.
A Closet Detox will save you money
Just think of the money you’ll save if you can finally stop bringing home items that you never wear. In fact, go to your closet right now and try to identify your pattern…your style breakthrough. Do you have five tailored suits you don’t actually wear? How many turtleneck sweaters do you see? Is it a sea of aqua blue? Do a rough estimate of how much those unworn items in your closet have cost you over the years. If you include shoes and accessories you’re going to come up with a number in the thousands of dollars.
The Closet Detox process will give you more space as you purge everything that doesn’t fit, is out of date and just doesn’t flatter you, but it’s about more than that.
A Closet Detox will help you…
• identify patterns in your shopping habits.
• reinvest in outfits that you’ll wear over and over and feel good about.
• stop wasting money on clothes that don’t work for you.
• feel more confident in the clothes you wear because you’ll only keep the stuff you really love.
• help someone else who is less fortunate by donating all the gently worn pieces that don’t work for you, but will probably be great on someone else.
The bottom line is that there is a style breakthrough in your closet adding up to thousands of dollars, just like there was for my client who had no idea she was buying pants she would never wear until I pointed out the pattern.
If you can’t see the pattern, you won’t have that style breakthrough and you’ll continue to waste money on clothes you never wear.
Try purging your closet by yourself or work with a stylish friend who can offer good fashion advice. If not, we’re always here to assist. A Closet Detox could be the single greatest investment you ever make in yourself, your image and ultimately, your personal success.
