Pets, unlike their human counterparts, don’t take well to changing their diet and must be slowly led into eating their new cuisine to prevent stomach upset. Many pets will not like having their food changed and will take awhile to acclimate themselves to the taste. Therefore the wisest way to change their food is to mix their old food with the new fare over a period of days, as suggested by most veterinarians. This allows for their systems and taste buds to adjust without an abrupt change.
Opinions vary on what the proper ratio of food is for the switchover and how long it should take. We prefer the fourths method.
Here’s how: 3/4 their food to 1/4 new food given for at least 2 days
1/2 their food to 1/2 new food given for at least 2 days
1/4 their food to 1/2 new food given for at least 2 days
Then feed your pet only the new food.
This may take some time and effort but it will help avoid bigger problems down the road making you and your pet much happier.
You can serve plain yogurt with the food to help stave off any digestion problems. The proteins in the yogurt will help stabilize their stomachs especially if they are changing from canned food to kibble. Hard foods are often recommended by veterinarians in order to sustain healthy teeth and gums.
The following symptoms can appear as a result of changing your pet’s food too quickly: loss of appetite, stomach upset, throwing up, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Try not to change your pet’s food before an upcoming show or competition because this can cause indigestion or inflammation of the bowel leading to vomiting and/or diarrhea.
Changing your pet’s food a lot can also lead to picky eating habits, constant upset stomach, or chronic diarrhea. Find a healthy, safe, hypoallergenic dog or cat food that you and your pet will be happy with and then stick to it. Remember saving time and money at the store often means spending time and money at the veterinarian’s office. Good Luck!
