Though nutritionist have always stressed that our diet is the best source of vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids and fiber, and also food that are in their natural form are best adapted to the human digestive system. In contrast, supplements contain only one isolated form of a nutrient, which normally lack energy, fiber, and other dietary components that provide nutritional balance. Recent years, as we shifted our focus from prevention of deficiency diseases to maximizing health and in order to prevent chronic disease, the demand on multivitamins have increased dramatically. Researchers recently concluded that most people could benefit from multivitamins.
They are especially important for pregnant women and also for those who do not eat enough fruits and vegetables. A report published in leading medical journal, JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) in year 2002, recommended that all adults take a multivitamin every day, as one way to ensure an adequate intake of important vitamins and minerals. The increase in the availability of multi vitamin supplements has led to a great variety in the brands and also the actual content of the multi vitamin supplements. The quality of these multivitamins are different and how we going to choose which one suitable for us? First thing to consider when choosing a brand of multivitamins will be: Is your multivitamin synthetic or natural? Read the label carefully. Word such as “isolates” usually refers to synthetic. If the ingredients are extracted from natural, they will definitely say so.
They will also definitely tell you if there were no additives, no preservatives or major potential allergens in the product. Most supplement manufacturers even from the leading brands tend to use synthetic vitamins because they are cheaper to make. Most of the synthetic vitamins are less effective because due to their low bio - availability and many of the key synergistic components that are found in nature are missing in the process of making. The labeling of the actual percentage of the recommended daily allowance for each vitamin in a multi vitamin supplement should be clearly indicated.
So, bear in mind when choosing your next multivitamins, read the label carefully, do not just consider the price. A bad quality of multivitamins will do more harm than good.
