W hy do some people find frosting tough? A few of the common reasons include paucity of time, impatience and the lack of right kind of tools. Like cooking any recipe, for frosting a cake too, you need prior preparation and some amount of organization before you take the plunge. Here are some tips to make the whole exercise of “how to - frosting” simpler:

  • Ensure that the cake and the frosting are properly cooled. This means that the cake should be cooled for at least four hours or may be for overnight.

  • The right kind of tools include a spatula made of stainless steel which can also be replaced by using a butter knife, as this too has a flat surface.

  • If the cake layer is dome-shaped, slice out the dome with a serrated knife to flatten the surface. Also remove any batter bubbles formed during baking. These areas would be hidden by frosting.

  • To prevent the cake from sliding during the frosting process, anchor it with a small amount of frosting on the plate.

  • If the cake is being frosted on a serving dish, you should tuck wax or parchment paper strips around the bottom edges of the cake, before starting the frosting.

  • Loose crumbs should be removed from the cake surface using a pastry brush.

  • Apply a thin layer of frosting which can prevent any cake crumbs from showing in the outer frosting layer. This portion of the frosting can be thinned by adding water or milk. This initial layer of frosting should be allowed to set for about 2 hours before applying the outer coating.

  • For first timers, choosing a thinner frosting makes spreading easier than a thicker frosting.

  • The spreading spatula should be dipped in warm water frequently to keep the knife clean and help smooth the surface of the cake.
Hopefully, these tips would enhance your knowledge about how to do frosting and make the whole exercise simple and free of mishaps.
