In order to get rid of these streaks and strains, you must use the right type of cleaner.
Caustic cleaners are great for killing mold and do not cost too much money. Bleach is commonly used with roof washing, but it can have a very bad effect. In fact, using bleach can nullify your roof warranty because it can break down the composition of the shingle. Even a solution with a small percentage of bleach can end up in roof failure in a short amount of time.
So what is the right roof cleaner that won’t damage your roof or shorten its life? Here is a formula that experts have used. Start by watering down the roof a little to cool the temperature of your roof a bit. Next, use an X-Jet filled with QwicClean Roof Cleaner and cover the shingles.
Let this cleaner sit on the shingles for approximately fifteen minutes so it can work its magic. Then it’s time to power wash using a light pressure setting. If you come across a particular stubborn stain, a soft scrub brush can be used to work through the stain. The power washing and any scrubbing is done from the top of the roof. Then it is time to go back down to the ground for the final rinse.
If your roof requires more serious detailed cleaning, then special equipment is necessary to ensure that no one falls off the roof. A high quality roof cleaning solution will cause your roof surface to be very slippery so extra safety precautions are necessary.
Because your main goal in cleaning your roof is to enhance your home’s appearance, you will want to focus most of your roof cleaning effort on the side of the home facing the street.
