INDONESIA, Nov 08 — Patches on the face and the rest of the body can be unsightly. No matter how much you make yourself appear presentable, the patches on the face can give you a not so good impression. The skin generally takes its color from the pigment called melanin.

The skin generally takes its color from the pigment called melanin. The pigment is produced by the cells melanocytes. There are times when melanocytes become hyperactive and produce the melanin pigment more than what the skin needs. This is triggered by hormonal imbalance, pregnancy, phototoxic allergies, and a lot more.
But don’t worry.....melasma can be prevented. If your estrogen rises, due to pregnancy or taking the pill, there’s a good chance you could develop Melasma. The single best way to prevent it is by staying out of the sun (and tanning booths) completely. The second best way is to wear a good sunscreen at all times - even if you leave the house for only 5 minutes to run an errand. Zinc Oxide based sunscreens are the absolute best for protecting your skin from the sun. I would recommend a sunscreen with at least 10% Zinc Oxide, and at least SPF 30 at all times!
Make sure to reapply if you are outdoors for more than a few hours, and reapply after swimming or sweating. Unfortunately, Melasma can happen quickly, and just one day of sun exposure without a good sunscreen can cause it. Once you get Melasma, it’s difficult to get rid of, at least quickly, so protection is by far your most important measure. But if you are already get melasma, there are some natural treatments that can be done. There are several topical options to treat Melasma, and they are supposed to be applied just to the dark patches, not to your whole face.
That way you are just lightening the dark areas, rather than lightening your whole face. Unfortunately, it’s not easy to apply a cream just to small areas of your skin, at least from my own experience. hydroquinone, a skin lightener, is the most common used ingredient for Melasma, and sun spots. It has elicited some controversy, because a lot of people claim it can be hazardous. Ironically, it can make you more sun-sensitive, so if you are not staying out of the sun, you can make your Melasma worse! I am not sure what to believe about the safety of Hydroquinone, but a lot of reputable skin care companies still use the ingredient. Glycolic Acid, and Tretinoin, or Retinol are also used by themselves, or in combination, to treat Melasma. Kojic acid, Azelaic acid, Licorice extract, Salicylic acid and Vitamin C are also ingredients that can possibly lighten your dark patches. For those that enjoy a natural treatment for melasma, the following can be done, ie :
Crush and extract the juice of mint leaves and apply all over the face.
Grate a peeled cucumber, add lime juice and blend to make a paste. Apply to the face, let dry and wash off. It’s an excellent melasma home remedy.
Mix and stir well to for a lotion two tablespoons vinegar, one tablespoon rosewater, and juice of one cucumber. Dab the face completely, let dry. Repeat the procedure until the lotion has been used up.
Grate 2 to 3 peeled carrots, boil in little water until it dries up, cool, and mash. Apply over the face and leave for 10-15 minutes, rub gently before rinsing.
To reduce melasma, peel and mash ripe banana and apply over the face, wash off after ten minutes.
Peel and grate raw potato, put into a muslin cloth, tie to form a pad and rub over the face in a firm and circular motion for five minutes then wash the face.
Powder dried orange peels and add two tablespoons curd to form a paste. Apply to the face, let dry and rinse off with cold water.
