What new?
The name for starters…Apple`s latest is known as the iPhone 3G S, with the S standing for “ speed “ . Apple claims it`s up to twice as fast as the regular 3G version, with 7.2Mbps HSDPA for online access instead of its predecessor`s 3.6Mbps top speed, and apparently a faster processor too.
There`s also more storage 32GB, up from 16GB on the 3G. That`s far more than its most obvious rival. The Palm Pre ( reviewed on p36 ) enough for about 4,000 MP3s at maximum quality and with iTunes` new features. You`ll be listening to more music than ever on it thousands of vids or hundreds of apps.
The camera has been beefed up to three megapixels and finally takes video as well again trumping the Pre, if not any other phone on the market. It now handles auto adjustment of focus, exposure, color and contrast. You can also tap any part of the screen to focus on an individual subject.
Apple may not be the first with certain features, but it has a habit of implementing them better than everyone else, and the new voice commands are a great example.
Making calls by speaking the name of a contact is nothing new, but how about choosing what music to listen to?. You can now rap out demands for specific artists, albums or play list, activate Apple`s play list generating Genius function and tell it to pause,fast forward, stop and etc… It`ll even read out what`s playing, iPod Shuffle style, should you ask.
iTunes also now supports downloading movies straight to your phone, no computer needed. It`ll take about 25 minutes to download a two hour movie over a 7.2Mbps connection running at full speed.
Perhaps more significant than the hardware upgrade although video capture IT DOWNLOADS MOVIES, SHOOTS VIDEO, HOLDS 32GB OF STUFF…IT EVEN CUT AND PASTES and improved storage and battery life do up the ante somewhat, is the new iPhone 3.0 firmware.
This throws in the long awaited likes of cut and paste and MMS. As well as spotlight search, which tracks down apps and contacts in a flash. Nike support is also built in, while a new Tom Tom app allows full, turn by turn satnav functionality at last.
The Palm Pre may be more hyped, but the app-laden, storage heavy iPhone 3G S fixes most of the shortcomings of its predecessor. Its announcement so cruelly soon after the Pre`s launch means Palm`s device was almost literally only king for a day. Apple`s reign continues all but uninterrupted.

The camera can now handle video, catching up with every phone on sale, but overtaking Palm`s Pre.
2. VOICE CONTROL
As well as voice dialing you can control iTunes by speaking. Ask what`s playing, and it`ll read out the artist and track name.
3. COMPASS
Tells you which direction you`re facing and is embedded in Google Maps. So you should never walk the wrong way again.
4. STILLS
As well as adding video to its repertoire, the camera now takes three rather than two megapixel snaps and has auto focus.
