UNITED STATES, Jan 28 — A young girl in school I was the quiet one
Hiding in the silence
And standing in the shadows of domestic violence.
I tried to tell you about my pain,
When I turned in that assignment
A story I wrote called "Nobody Cares"
I didn’t write that for accomplishment
I wrote it for acknowledgement.
I was trying to tell you through my written tears
The hurt inside that I was tying to get out.

And the time has come to step out of the shadows
For that young girl whose story was never heard
And for the ones who never got to say
What the silence could not convey

A young girl in school I was the quiet one

Hiding in the silence

And standing in the shadows of domestic violence.

I tried to tell you about my pain,

When I turned in that assignment

A story I wrote called "Nobody Cares"

I didn’t write that for accomplishment

I wrote it for acknowledgement.

I was trying to tell you through my written tears

The hurt inside that I was tying to get out.

But you never said a word

And I withdrew further into my silent hideout.

A few years later

I tried to tell my story again

When I ran away from home

But there was no way to explain

When all eyes were upon me.

And I didn’t feel safe to speak

So I stayed in the shadows

Where silence bespeaks

The denial of sorrows.

And I kept hiding

In the shadows of domestic violence.

I had no voice during my childhood

And I was always pushed aside

And misunderstood.

I needed to know that someone cared

But I was ignored

Like I was never there.

And I spent many years hiding in those shadows

As domestic violence kept shooting me down

With it’s arrows.

And the time has come to step out of the shadows

For that young girl whose story was never heard

And for the ones who never got to say

What the silence could not convey.

This time her story will be heard

So that maybe others will see

All those still out there suffering

Hiding in the silence

And standing in the shadows of domestic violence.
