UNITED STATES, Mar 29 — I went to my parent’s house last night to install a light fixture.  They were not going to be home, so they laid out everything I was going to need, except the light bulb.  Once the fixture was installed, I obviously needed to make sure it worked.  Did you know that the energy used in the average home can be responsible for more than twice the greenhouse gas emissions of the average car? I went to my parent’s house last night to install a light fixture.  They were not going to be home, so they laid out everything I was going to need, except the light bulb.  Once the fixture was installed, I obviously needed to make sure it worked.

I went to the cabinet that she keeps all of her light bulbs in and the only thing there were several fluorescent light bulbs.  I couldn’t help but think, UGH, really?  I know…my mom is so good about trying to conserve energy and save money where she can.  Don’t get me wrong, I am good about recycling, I use the reusable grocery store bags, and I am not independently wealthy, that saving money would be an option, but I have not jumped onto the fluorescent lighting band wagon …. Yet!

When I think of fluorescent lighting, it conjures up the terrible lighting while I was in school, the lighting over my desk at work or the fluorescent lights that flicker for what seems like forever before it stays lit.  It was because all of this that I searched high and low for an incandescent bulb for this fixture.  I couldn’t find a single one.  I thought mom has completely gone over the edge.   So, I took the only bulb option I could find and I screwed it into the socket.

Fully expecting the flickering blue tinged fluorescent light I am so accustom too, I turned on the light switch... ……..It didn’t happen.  The light came on instantly and it wasn’t blue in the least, it really gave off a nice amount of light. So I have come full circle, I have jumped head first onto the fluorescent lighting band wagon.  It is amazing at the choices we have for lighting.  Lamps and fixtures in every style, in every finish both indoors and out are available.  There would be no excuse not to use fluorescent lighting in your home, and why would you want to.  The facts speak for themselves.

By using fluorescent lighting you will use about a quarter as much of energy compared to that of a conventional bulb and they last between 4-10 times longer.

Less energy, longer life equals less waste than that of an incandescent light bulb.  Did you know that the energy used in the average home can be responsible for more than twice the greenhouse gas emissions of the average car? When you use less energy at home, you reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and help protect our environment from the risks of global climate change. You can see the good it can create and you can see the money savings?  But you also end up pulling out that step stool far fewer times in your life. And honestly, who doesn’t want that most of all? Apparently moms do know best!
