The worse part about the disease is that the patient cannot identify its proper origin. This makes things more difficult to comprehend. The combination of all these issues encourages people to ignore the issue till they start developing visible signs of gingivitis or gum inflammation. However, the new discovery of laser surgery for advanced gum diseases has increased the number of patients seeking early treatment for the issue. The technique is popularly termed as LANAP that stands for "Laser-assisted new attachment procedure". And the technique has been proven far more effective and faster than conventional periodontal surgeries.
Formerly, gum surgeries were quite invasive which involved removal of affected tissues followed by ligation and stitches. The procedure worked but it entailed lot of postoperative complications like bleeding, infection, delayed recovery, pain, further inflammation etc. To this end, LANAP can be seen as a welcoming change that promises quick recovery and limited or zero postoperative issues. The treatment is fully approved by Food and Drug Administration. The procedure is painless and simple which involves no bleeding. A thin laser beam is used to destroy the infected cells from the gum tissues surrounding the teeth. Alongside this procedure they use a special coagulation system that minutely curbs the source of bleeding. Thus the procedure is quite simple and not at all harmful for the surrounding healthy tissues.
LANAP treatments are available for all kinds of gum diseases. However, it is advisable if the patient takes the treatment during the preliminary stages of his periodontal pathology. This would require less debridement and faster recovery. Gum diseases left untreated can cause several complications. They can affect the general health of an individual leading to worsening of various diseases and also development of new ones. Symptoms like puffy gums, bleeding and loosened gums are the initial signs of a growing gum disease or gingivitis. This is also an indication that the patient is sheltering loads of bacteria and germs within his oral cavity. These germs and microorganisms gain access to the body and start polluting various systemic structures within the patient’s body.
Researches have proved that prolonged gum diseases can make a patient more vulnerable to diseases like diabetes, heart diseases, cardiovascular disorders, strokes etc. During the initial stages, gingivitis can cause severe bad breath, weakness, fatigue etc. The best way to avoid all these troubles is to get regular dental checkups and to take timely treatments. Besides, now LANAP has simplified the entire surgical protocol which is yet another reason to get prompt treatment as soon as possible.
LANAP is not way too expensive and anyone can get it. At present around 700 dentists are trained and approved to perform LANAP procedures.
