T he theory of detox suggests that the process is beneficial to health because it allows the body time to clear accumulated toxins. These toxins can be detrimental to health in a number of ways and can result in symptoms such as fatigue or headaches. There are some detox myths which most scientists agree are wrong.

There are many scientists working in various fields who believe that detox is just a sales tactic. There are lots of companies marketing a wide range of detox products which they claim will help the body to rid it of toxins or provide nutrition during the process.

Detox must be a pretty easy concept to sell because we all want to believe we can have it all. We want to believe there is a way to reverse the bad things we do to our bodies. Detox diets are also popular. They usually involve consuming a lot of juices and fresh fruit and vegetables while taking laxatives. Research has shown they do not lead to long term weight loss because they do not burn fat just cause the body to lose a lot of liquid. Therefore as soon as the previous diet is resumed the weight is gained rapidly.

There is no evidence that detoxing for a short period of time has a long term effect on the body. If you overload your system with fats, sugars, alcohol and caffeine for the majority of the time, then a week of drinking juice and eating vegetables is not going to make any difference.

Real detox involves being good to your body. Most of us understand what this means; fresh foods, low alcohol intake, not smoking, drinking lots of water and taking regular exercise. If this is undertaken as a lifestyle not a fad for a week or two then teas, special drinks, skin pads and other detox products are not necessary.

When the systems of the body are working the alcohol consumed on an especially drunken night can be expelled by the body quickly. It would take at the most thirty six hours. Most scientists agree that the thing to do after a period of excess is to drink a lot of water and leave the rest to your body. If your body is properly hydrated it can clear a large amount of contaminants efficiently. Although the most effective way to keep you body toxin free is not to put them in there at all.

Many researchers question whether detox is ever necessary as the body has a number of systems for filtering and expelling toxins. Much marketing for detox states that even the air is polluting our bodies. That there are particles from the air which are accumulating in us and contributing to illness. However the lungs are pretty efficient at filtering out particles so they never get into our bloodstream in the first place. Another myth is that of the detox skin patch which it is claimed draw out poisons through the skin. The skin excretes excess toxins on its own, which is one of its functions. Skin patches may help to draw out toxins but there is no research to prove this and even is it true the affect will be minimal.

Detox myths abound because there is a lot of money to be made from selling associated products. If you want a healthy body you need to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
