Leather flooring needs 24 hours to acclimatize to the room it will be installed in. Old flooring is removed and sub-floors are covered with poly with overlapping edges.



It is recommended that your design layout is checked to make sure that no planks or tiles are less than 4 inches wide. If you are arranging tiles or planks in a pattern, start in the middle of the room and measure out. Install planks from different boxes at the same time to ensure color variation.



Planks and tiles that click together, form floating floors and don’t require glue. Older styles of leather flooring may require glue.



Maintenance & Repair



Floor protectors on furniture legs are recommended. High heels, which are hard on any floor, should be avoided. Humidity of 40-60% is ideal for leather flooring.



Leather flooring requires sweeping and vacuuming regularly. Occasionally a dry mop can be used. Sand and dirt should not be allowed to build up. Cleaning kits for leather flooring can be bought from leather dealers if damp maintenance is necessary. A carnauba wax can be applied and buffed initially, but most companies recommend against cleaning leather floors except for vacuuming.



If leather planks or tiles get damaged, they can be replaced using tools from the dealer ship to replace them. Most leather floors are easy to repair and maintain.



Benefits & Drawbacks



The benefits os leather flooring definitely outweigh the drawbacks. Easy installation, easy repair, and very little maintenance, make leather flooring a desirable option. As well, leather flooring comes in a range of colors and textures. Glosses for leather flooring range from matte to high gloss. Most leather flooring is made from recycled leather, making it a natural, recyclable product. Leather flooring is equally as durable as hardwood, adds warmth to a room, and suppresses sound.



There are few drawbacks to leather flooring. It will fade with sunlight. It is not recommended for kitchens or bathrooms, high traffic areas, or damp areas. Leather flooring options have limited quantities of each style and color; thus, it is a good idea to purchase extra for potential repairs. Finally, the largest drawback to leather flooring is the cost. The cost of leather flooring is comparable to high quality wool carpet or excellent quality hardwood. In other words, leather flooring is expensive.
