UNITED KINGDOM, Aug 24 — An argument by psychotherapist Sue Brayne
Psychotherapist Sue Brayne has argued that, contrary to conventional wisdom, menopause should be seen as a natural and positive process that women experience, and not as a medical problem that needs mending. Brayne presented her argument at the British Psychological Society Psychology of Women Section annual conference, at Cumberland Lodge, Windsor.
The psychotherapist has based her observation on the experiences shared by numerous women in their menopausal stage. Since there was so little data about the significant life changes that a woman experiences in her 50s, she decided to delve deeper into the subject
Sue has lamented the recent scientific attempts to cure menopause. Instead, she believes that more efforts should be invested into understanding the emotional, spiritual and psychological changes that women experience in this stage of their life, including the loss of fertility, the fading away of youth, and the waning attention.
Sue has also published her insights in her book Sex, Meaning, and the Menopause. She had interviewed over 60 women and nine men to understand the variety of experiences faced by women going through menopause and their male companions. These experiences include sexual variations, change in relationship dynamics, and insights into how older women are able to reinvent themselves in a society focused on sexuality and obsessed with youthfulness.
Sue Brayne has categorized Sex, Meaning and the Menopause as a direct reaction to the attitude of numerous websites and books that view menopause as a nothing more than a symptomatic medical condition. Since there was so little data about the significant life changes that a woman experiences in her 50s, she decided to delve deeper into the subject. Sue hopes that her book would help men and women, view menopause in a whole new light.
