UNITED KINGDOM, Dec 06 — What do you do when you are in a taxi on a Moscow Highway at 3.30 am at 140 kilometers per hour and you look at the rear view mirror and you see your taxi driver with his eyes closed? Do you shout? What if this startles him and then he looses control of the car? Should you move him? Or would this cause the same effect as shouting? How long has he been with his eyes closed? Is he asleep or just resting his eye? Has he done this already in the journey but you did not see it? Will you make it to the airport alive?
This experience happened to me this week when I was traveling back from Moscow to London during one of my visits to this amazing and crazy city. But I must confess that this is not the first time this happens and it is not a pleasant affair. The driver next to you who is checking his messages while driving, he’s just put your life at risk or the maintenance worker who has failed to do his routine checks properly

This experience happened to me this week when I was Traveling back from Moscow to London during one of my visits to this amazing and crazy city. But I must confess that this is not the first time this happens and it is not a pleasant affair. I tend to take the very early flight from and to Moscow to avoid the well know traffic of the Russian Capital, but may be sitting in a 3 hour traffic jam is a better option than making it to the hotel/airport in 45 minutes, as it seems to me that one of this days, I may not make it at all!
But I guess the realization of knowing that you are not completely in control of your Life prompted me to write this story to share with all.
You can have a very healthy life, eat properly, go to the gym, give up all vices know to man in the hope that you may get to see your grand children get married and even perhaps go to their children’s baptism (it is possible) and so you invest time, money and effort to make sure you reach this goal when in actual fact you are only about 10% in charge of reaching that goal.
Yes you should live a healthy life and yes you may get to 100, but so
many other factors influence whether you can get there or not.
For starters, there are unfortunate diseases, which may cut your life short. A few years ago a cousin of mine, the same age as me, gave birth to a lovely little girl. She was a healthy, full of life woman, who, in everyone’s eyes, was a young mother ready to start a new life with her family. Shortly after the birth of her daughter, she fell ill. After a few months she was not recovering and she was diagnosed with leukemia and in a matter of months she was gone leaving behind her newly born daughter and loving husband. This is unfortunate and many of us know stories like this.
But there is the second element, which also determines if you make it to your envisioned end, and that is people around you! Yes you can fight leukemia and most diseases, but some times they are terminal and no one can help you. But our lives depend on the person next to you. Each of us is held accountable for the next person’s life and each of us put at risk these lives.
Your mechanic, if he fails to check your break properly, he has just put that life at risk. Your taxi driver who did not have a good night sleep and doses off at the wheel, he’s just put your life at risk. The driver next to you who is checking his messages while driving, he’s just put your life at risk or the maintenance worker who has failed to do his routine checks properly. We all, at some point or other, are responsible for someone’s life.
I guess I just want to make sure I get to 100, and it seems I will have to work harder at it, more than just going to the gym or eating an apple a day!
