AUSTRALIA, Nov 03 — The Malaysian Refugee Swap Deal between Australia and Malaysia, which amends Migration Act, has still not been passed in the Australian Parliament as the Australian Government failed to secure the necessary votes required since the Liberal-National Coalition did not support the said amendments. Despite of that, the Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, announced that asylum speakers will be allowed to go for “onshore processing” instead of an “offshore processing,” which means that they will be allowed to process a bridging visa on the Australian mainland, if unable to process within the existing detention network.

The Prime Minister sees the need to develop further the community detention system to act swiftly in order to alleviate pressure on the immigration detention network.
Ms. Gillard expresses that she is still committed to the Malaysian swap deal.
