alk about pre-publicity , Palm`s Pre had the gadget world frothing prior to its release. It was going to restore Palm`s reputation, go head to head with the sainted iPhone for quality and features, and knit together the disparate strands of our digital lives into a satisfying whole. Guess what? To a large extent, it actually lives up to that hype…
Palm has done a LOT of things right with the Pre. Its webOS ( Looking to computing`s cloud based future, Palm`s purpose built OS uses Java and HTML for its apps ) is one step closer to bringing a computer style experience to a smartphone, letting you have multiple apps ( IM,Twitter, music and etc ) open simultaneously. It`s not necessarily a smart idea to run all your apps at once as you`ll get treacle like slow down, but it still allows much greater flexibility.
The Universal Search feature lets you bring up contacts and apps just by typing at the main screen. It`s incredibly useful, essentially allowing you to Google for things on your phone and beyond, as it also looks for whatever you type on the web, even in maps and on Twitter.
Web 2.0 citizens will love Synergy, which grabs and synchronizes your Google and Facebook accounts and merges your contacts, so instead of multiple Joe Bloggs. One from your main address book, one from Gmail and so on you just have one. It also threads conversations across multiple platforms, so if you start a conversation with someone in SMS, then go to IM, it`ll all be in one window…
The 3.1 inch touchscreen is crisp, with the same, 320x480 resolution as the iPhone, although Apple`s device has a larger screen. Multi touch is superb, feeling even more accurate and responsive than the iPhone 3G. Particularly when flicking your finger upwards to exit a program or sliding a digit along the bottom of the screen to bring up the five launch bar choices.
A mesmeric, rippling effect accompanies your every finger sweep and the menu system, in conjunction with Universal Search, is fast and intuitive.
Media functions are not as cool as the iPhone`s. The 3.2 meg camera is okay, but there`s no video.
The music and video players also suffer by comparison to the iPhone, despite the iTunes syncing and playlist compatibility that Palm has cunningly built in to the Pre.
The Exterior may be ropey but the inner workings are a wonder to behold…
There`s also only 8GB of storage, which with the launch of the 32GB iPhone, looks feeble. The battery isn`t amazing, either you`ll need to be disciplined about juicing it daily, as with any other feature-laden smartphone.
The major disappointment is the ropey build quality. The keypad is cramped with spongy, plasticly keys, there`s also no predictive text to auto correct your inevitable typos. The edges of it are extraordinarily sharp, too…
Even so, though Palm may have skimped on the exterior, the inner workings of the Pre are a wonder to behold. For now, the App Store keeps the iPhone 3G S ahead of the Pre, but this is still a massively impressive mobile that at least holds its own with Apple`s in most areas…
The Details
1. THE SCREEN
Slightly smaller than the iPhone`s at 3.1 inches across. The Pre`s screen has the same resolution. Put them side by side and the Pre just aces it, and sports better multi touch.
2. CAMERA ACTION
The 3.2 meg camera is average. No flash and no video, unlike the iPhone 3G S ( and just about every other mobile out there ).
3. SPEAKER
Allows you to hold your phone horizontally to your mouth and shout into it, as seen on The Apprentice. Also lets you entertain fellow commuters with a spot of Fleetwood Mac…
4. BUTTONS
The pull out keyboard can`t compete with, say, the N97`s. It`s cramped and feels cheap, but it`s at least there as an option.
Three Killer Features Palm Pre`s webOS
The Pre`s webOS is feature packed, intelligent and runs smoothly. The look of it is slick, although icons could be easier to identify. Your five key apps are in a line at the bottom, swoosh your finger across this area to bring them up at any time with the rest of the screen used for skipping through apps, finding programs, contacts and etc via Universal Search. You swipe apps up from the base of the screen to open them, then whisk them off the screen to close them. The multi touch works superbly here :
1. MULTI TASKING
The Pre can have multiple apps open at once. As long as you don`t try to run too many, it works great.
2. UNIVERSAL SEARCH
Sifts your contacts and apps, as well as Wikipedia, Google Search and Twitter, as soon as you start typing.
3. SYNERGY
Syncs contacts with Outlook, Facebook and Google, linking contacts shared across several…
