leet safety is one of hot topics or buzzwords in most corporate environments today, primarily due to the high insurance costs and worker’s compensation rates. Since fleet safety programs can have a huge affect on overall fleet safety that can lower insurance and worker’s comp rates, it behooves companies to invest time and energy in this area. One of the areas that are especially important in developing a strong fleet safety program is the company’s preventative maintenance program.
Components of a strong preventative maintenance program A strong preventative maintenance program should include components that prevent accidents from occurring in the first place. Here are some of the areas that should be adopted in any successful preventative maintenance program:
1. Vehicle inspections from a certified garage – A certified garage should conduct periodic inspections on all company vehicles (as per company policy and/or vehicle recommendations). Any vehicle that’s first assigned to an employee should be thoroughly inspected by the garage, even if it’s been inspected as recent as 5,000 miles. Besides the normal system checks (i.e. brakes, radiator, fuel line, engine, etc.), the vehicles should also be inspected for safety issues such as operational air bags and seat belts and tire conditions.
2. Employees present at safety inspection part – The best way to train employees on a vehicle’s safety is to have the fleet safety manager review with the employee all of a vehicle’s potentially hazardous areas such as bald tires, directional signals that might not work, squeaky brakes, or lose mirrors. Periodic inspection forms (i.e. every 5,000 miles) should then be completed by the driver and turned into the fleet manager.
3. Reward employees when they discover unsafe vehicle conditions – When employees discover unsafe vehicle conditions (i.e. during a routine periodic safety inspection), they should be rewarded appropriately. For example, if an employee discovers a nail in a tire (could cause potential blowout), he could receive a free tank of gas or a $50 bonus. If the brakes are noisy but the brake light does not go on, and the employee notifies the fleet manager anyway, he could receive a free vacation day. These simple incentives can really increase safety awareness and enthusiasm for a safe fleet safety program.
