o most of us, thoughts of the future and past obscure the present moment to a great degree. We consider experience gained in the past to be wisdom and knowledge acquired to be understanding. We consider the pursuit of ideals and goals to be virtue. We believe that what has "happened to us" in the past has formed and molded us into our present selves. Regret, remorse, resentments, as well as expectations, hopes, and dreams all serve to prevent us from experiencing the present moment. Reality is in the present moment and cannot be in the past, nor the future as they do not exist,
We see, hear, taste, and smell, touch and maneuver through the material world around us. We rarely consider that these senses may be creating an illusion that is based more in the way we process sensory information than what is truly "out there." One example of this is that the world you see, the table, the wall, the computer screen in front of you are not seen "out there", you see them in a sort of screen within your mind. When you touch, taste, smell, hear, you are experiencing only mental phenomenon.
Another example of the illusion that we live in is related to the processing time of our perception and thought. If osmething is too large we cannot sense it, if something is too small we do not sense it, if something moves too fast, or too slow, we simply cannopt perceive it or its movement. The hour hand on a clock is a great example.
Take a look at an object in the room right now. Do you realize that the particles that create the substance of that object are moving at such intense speeds that you actually see them in millions of places as if at once. This is what gives our world a sense of stability and staticity that simply does not exist. If those particles stopped moving suddenly, there would be a bit of dust on the ground. Imagine if the speed of your thought and perception processes were greatly speeded up, s that you could see the movement of the particles. The world would take on a more fluid and phantom appearance, perhaps the unity of all things that the mystics write about would be more evident.
Our life and affairs revolve around the particles in our world, the space is often ignored. We do not often think of the silence that enables the tones, tempo, and harmony of music, nor the physical space that enables material objects to exist.
Reality is not what we see, hear, taste, smell, feel, move, nor orient through. What our sensory and mental systems perceive is what they are programmed or conditioned to experience. Prior experience and expectations play a huge role in that perception. Reality is only in the present moment, while experience and knowledge are in the past, and expectations and ideals are in the future.
