Doing so could result in bad things happening to an otherwise good engine. Even so having a basic understanding of what transpires in the engine rebuild process is a good idea.
When Japanese engines are submitted for a rebuild process, there are several things that will take place. First the used engine is removed from the vehicle. Once removed, mechanics then begin the process of stripping that engine down to its original long block condition. The term long block is a reference to an engine secondary configuration that entails working on the engine short block, cylinder head assembly and a valve train on an engine flathead if needed. With the long block assembly in process the rebuild of the engine continues.
Internal components of the older Toyota engines or domestic engines undergo a cleaning process. Items such as the valve covers, timing covers and intake manifold receive a chemical bath returning them to a bare metal form. The chemical bath process can consist of a sodium hydroxide jet stripper spray or placing the items into an oven bake setting with the chemical solutions. Once the chemical bath has been administered, the entire engine receives a fresh coat of paint. In addition to its cosmetic appeal, the rebuilt engine will now have a protective barrier against corrosion.
Qualified mechanics will make sure that top quality sealants and gaskets are utilized in the engine rebuild process. This will ensure a healthy life of the new engine for at least the next year and possibly well beyond that time frame. With everything in place, the engine receives a pressure test on the cooling system. As the rebuild comes to a close, the mechanic will check the placement of the engine and take a final review. Any adverse effects or parts will be brought to the customer’s attention at that point.
