My boating training and experience is old and not very reliable, but it's enough for me to enjoy myself and not put others in danger. I would never take out a boat that I couldn't handle, or go out on a day that was rough and dangerous. I know my limitations and don't want to risk either my life or the lives of others. Learning boating safety is essential for anyone who wants to take out a boat. Most people agree with this fact. It is easy for most people to understand why they need training in order to be safe. I hope you see where I'm going with this.
In order to get a marriage license one only needs three forms of identification. Even if you want a driver's license there are more hoops to go through and more knowledge you must have about driving than you need to get married. For reasons that defy all logic getting married is a snap. Nobody has to know the first thing about what it takes to remain married in order to get married. It is insane. When people get into serious relationships, get married and have children they wonder why things aren't working out and generally blame the other person for not having a happy marriage. Obviously it is critical to know what you are doing when you get married in order to have a good marriage.
Hey, that's why I took it upon myself to study what marriage is and how to keep it happy. I was one of those people who got married without having any idea of what I was getting into. It wasn't necessary to suffer, but it was inevitable. When I got married in 1975 the only good advice I got was to hang in there. For you there's a whole lot more advice. And I'll tell you what: you don't have to settle for a mediocre marriage, you can have the most amazing marriage on the face of the Earth.
It's like going boating. You can get out there not having any idea of what to do and as long as there are no waves you'll probably be OK. But why take a chance like that? Once you know how things work it's actually pretty easy and a lot of fun. Well marriage is a whole lot more fun than boating and not much more difficult to learn. In fact I think it's actually easier, because once you hear what you need to know it makes perfect sense.
Let's say you're out in the middle of the lake and a storm is coming, your sails are torn and you need a rescue; hang on! The first thing you have to do is stop doing what got you into the jam you're in. Chances are your spouse is mad at you, and you're mad at your spouse. Don't say anything mean. Don't get back at them. Don't be mad at them (yes you can control your mind). Don't hurt their feelings. Don't talk behind their back. Don't dig up other stuff that they did to you in the past. Sit back down on the boat and recall all the love that you have felt in the past. Take a deep breath and remember the moment you fell in love. Relax your shoulders and picture them in the cutest way you remember. Smile a little… a little more. Now a big smile. Think about what a good person your spouse is and how much they deserve your love… OK, if something huge has happened that is very difficult to get past you need to read Lessons For A Happy Marriage and see if it's covered. There are different kinds of relationships and my focus is on relationships between married couples, especially if there are children involved.
The idea that has taken root in our country that divorce does not hurt our children is preposterous. A marriage with children needs to be preserved and turned into a happy marriage. Other relationships really need to be analyzed to see if they are the right one for you. Some people came to me thinking they made a mistake when they got married because they felt they weren't right for each other. But they had children. To me that was proof that they were right for each other, and I made it my business to show them how they could have an amazingly happy marriage. All they needed was the manual. If you are married with children the odds of your marriage completely changing to one that is phenomenally happy is nearly 100%. I have seen it so often. You are good people and you deserve the love and security that comes with a happy marriage. By all means stop which you are doing and say to the person you love, "I love you."
