Rubber mountings is a type of vibration isolator that works as shock-absorbers, absorbing the vibrations and noise produced by any machine, thereby preventing excessive wear and tear on the equipment that it is supporting. Mechanically, it muffles the energy transmitted through the bushing by acting as an interface between two parts. It also separates the faces of two metal objects while allowing a certain amount of movement.

To put it simply, the noise created by vibrating metal parts or roaring engines can be quite perturbing and are notoriously difficult to put up with, especially, if you happen to be in close vicinity.
Then again, vibrating metal parts in engines cause loosening of parts and wear & tear which leads to malfunction or even complete failure of the equipment. Hence, it is clear that rubber mountings are designed not only to prevent irreparable damage and provide longer service life to equipment, but also, create a safe and efficient working environment.
History of Rubber Mountings
According to Charles Emil Sorensen, Danish-American principal of the Ford Motor Company, the adoption of rubber anti-vibrating mountings can chiefly be credited to Walter Chrysler, of the infamous Chrysler Corporation. According to him, in Walter Chrysler in his ’32 Plymouth model used rubber mountings to support the six-cylinder engine, which notably cut down noise and vibration. It was an instant success and today, mountings are used almost everywhere, right from electric-motor mounts, in refrigerators, radios, television sets to doors, hinges, windshields, fenders, spring hangers, shackles, and lamps—wherever mechanical noises are apparent, rubber is used to eliminate them.

Although it so seems that rubber mountings will cost a fortune going by all the facility they deliver, they are quite modestly priced and are easily available anywhere. But it is highly advisable to opt for high quality mountings from reputed brands that manufactures them adhering to a strict quality control program. This is because ordinary mounts manufactured from ordinary rubber may fail on you anytime, leading to several challenging and expensive issues.
