have been developing my first website recently. Its already on line and interested surfers can type http://academia.in in their address bar and have fun. Keeping this apart, during development of my website i focused more on the server side scripting so that my site does what it is intended to do.Although i also gave the required time to the site's presentation but one thing which i completely ignored is its html code. Developing my site in Microsoft .Net i leisurely used the drag and drop feature and rarely switched to HTML view to get one or two thing straight.
After completion of the site i was very much satisfied with the job done and now focused my energies for site optimization for search engines-seo. At that time i realized the power of HTML tags. The thing which i was ignoring all the time till now proved to be very important for SEO (unfortunately i had to check HTML code of each page again.)
The trick here is that all the search engine view your site as a text site i.e the site will appear similar to the one it appears in a text browser. And here lies the power of HTML tags. Tags like , etc have optional properties which allow you to enter text which wont be visible to user in normal browsing for example: tag has optional property of "alt" where you can write alternate text to be displayed when image is not displayed in the browser. One can easily insert keywords for which the site will be searched.

In past web developers could easily optimize site with meta tags and lead the search engines to whatever they wanted. They used to insert irrelevant keywords. But Search engines answered them back loud and clear. They came up with innovative algorithms which ranked sites more efficiently and couldn't be fooled easily. meta tags still play a role in SEO but they cannot improve your rankings to a great extent.
