U nderstanding seizure activity in our companion pets is an important part of pet ownership. Today many pets have disease process in which seizure activity is visable. If you have ever witnessed a pet have a seizure, you know how scary that can be. When our larger companion pets are in the throws of a seizure and unaware of what is going on around them, that is when they need their owners most.

The two types of seizure activity that is most commonly seen are the Partial and the Generalized seizure. Partial seizure simply means that the signs of seizure activity is shown only in a part of the body. This can be seen in the jerking of limbs or facial twitching or head bobbing.

The second type, and most common is the Generalized seizure. It is commonly refferred to as a Grand Mal Seizure. This term evoks in us the fear of what we witness. Grand Mal Seizures involve the entire body. Sometimes violent convulsing is seen, rarely is it not a scary scene.

There are three main parts to a seizure. Three phases that all owners should be aware of. If you have a pet that has seizures, you may know of them already. The first is the Preictal stage. The second is the Ictal stage, and the third is the Postictal stage. If you have seen a seizure you may be able to differentiate between the three. Most seizures last on average less than fifteen minutes, but those tend to be the longest minutes of most pet owners lives.

The Preictal stage is the stage where everything begins. At this point you may notice that your pet looks concerned or is uneasy. They may seek out your attention or comfort. An observant owner can tell when this is happening, and may be prepared for the next phase.

The Ictal Stage. This is when the actual seizure activity is seen. Body convulsing is seen here. Your pet may, at this time, lose control over urine and bowel control. They may even vomit. Unlike with people it is not necessary to ensure that they do not swollow their tongue. Unfortunatly many pets bite their tongue in the process of a seizure.

It is important that at this stage that you do not put your hand anywhere near the mouth. They are unaware of what is happening and may unintentianally bite the hand that pets them, as it were.

The last phase of the seizure is the Postictal phase. Here the owner may notice their companion pet is uncoordinated. Some pets, when coming from seizure activity have been known to exibit aggressive behavior. Even if this is not your pets normal behaviour, you should be cautious until he or she has returned to a closer state of normality.

If this is your pets first time having a seizure, experts suggest you have them seen by your regular Veterinarian for evaluation. Knowing the cause of seizure activty can help you and them be prepared and manage this better. In the end understanding the cause of and taking action to minimize the risk of further seizure activity in your pet, will keep them on the road to a healthier life.
