ealtors are in a Dangerous profession. The news frequently carries stories about Realtors who were robbed, raped and murdered while showing homes or at Open Houses. House showings and Open Houses are a Dangerous proposition for the lone Realtor, especially in isolated locations. In cases like these, carrying a concealed gun can provide security and safety. It can also mean that you carry yourself with more confidence, making it less likely that someone will target you. However, a person new to Guns might be hesitant to carry one, much less use it for its intended purpose. A gun for Protection is very personal choice that should not be entered into lightly.
A gun is meant for one purpose: to kill. If you're not willing to kill to ensure your safety, reconsider using this manner of personal Protection. While American law allows people to kill to preserve their lives, the toll it takes on the human psyche can be formidable. Many people would say that the preservation of one's own life is worth sacrificing the life of someone who, in their turn, chose to attempt the violation of the Realtor's person. However, the act of taking a life is not to be considered lightly - even if it is a Dangerous predator.
You must be fully in control of your gun and your purpose in using it. Some people operate under the erroneous notion that just carrying a gun and brandishing it threateningly at an attacker is enough to keep them safe. This is not true. A gun held by someone unable or unwilling to use it effectively can be taken and used against them.
A Realtor carrying a gun should have safety training. There are many courses available to interested person. Your gun should also be legally registered and you should always be in possession of a valid license/permit or whatever the area you are operating in requires. Different areas may require different licensing and remember that certain areas, like government or military installations, may prohibit outside weapons or require that you notify authorities that you are carrying one.
Some predators are well-versed in using Guns and, if they are using your Realtor profession to lure you into an isolated location, may have already accounted for the fact that you may be carrying. Don't let carrying a gun make you feel invulnerable. Stay safe, so you minimize the likelihood that you will have to use your gun. Adhere to basic safety principles, like meeting clients in your office first, bringing someone with you to showings and house tours and getting the personal information of the potential client.
If you carry a gun to house showings and Open Houses, you accept the fact that you are carrying a deadly weapon and treat it with the respect it deserves. This is not a toy, it is not something to be displayed to casual passers-by if they jostle you on the street and it is certainly not to be displayed in a threatening manner unless you are trying to preserve your life or the life of someone else. A gun should be your last resort.
