The principle behind voice recognition software is that you speak into a headphone and everything you say shows up in print on your computer. It will work with almost every piece of writing software you have, including your email programs. All you have to do is train the software, which means getting it used to your voice and vocal patterns, and then you’re off to the races.
Dragon is known as one of the best pieces of software for home and business use. The latest version is number 10, and it wasn’t all that much of a step up from previous versions, only it was created to work with Microsoft 64-bit computers. There are four different levels of the program, but the only difference in each is the size of the dictionary, and for almost everyone the standard package is all you’ll need.
It comes with a headset with a microphone, in case you don’t have one. The first thing you do is install the software. Then it will ask if it can scan your computer for documents so it can get a sense of your vocabulary speech patterns. That will take awhile.
Next, it will put you through a series of vocal tests to not only test the level of the microphone, but to try to learn your voice patterns. You will read text, and it will follow you around, and you’ll see things you’ve said highlighted. When it thinks it has your voice down, it will put up something else and you’ll have to read again. The process for it learning your voice never stops, and it claims 99% accuracy. I’ve found, however, that it’s probably closer to being between 90% and 95% instead; maybe it just doesn’t like my voice.
At this point you’re ready to test it out. There are many vocal commands it will teach you about where you won’t have to go to the keyboard to fix things, but sometimes you’ll get tired of it and just want to fix it. When you’re using the software, you need to speak steadily and not too fast, because it will type up some of the funniest statements you’ve ever seen, but they won’t be what you said.
If you have lots of things to compose, getting vocal recognition software could save you a lot of time, and certainly ease the stress on your hands and fingers. Dragon is rated pretty high, so think about buying it as your first test.
