I f you are a psychologist, you have probably considered what life would be like if you owned your own private practice. While the idea of owning your own practice may seem exciting, the thought of stepping out on your own may be a little frightening. This article will explain how you can take charge and start your own private psychology practice.

Education

Before making any major plans, you need to re-evaluate your education. Do you truly have what it takes to own a stand alone practice? To be a successful psychologist, you will need to have either a master’s or doctorate degree in psychology.

Costs

Realize that starting your own practice will require capital. Try to figure out all the upfront and ongoing costs and realistically consider if you really have the investment to tackle this right now. Consider ways to cut the costs of starting out. For instance, you might choose to only be in your office when a client has an appointment, allowing you to cut back on the cost of electricity and heating. Small savings like that can really add up.

Are you good at keeping books, scheduling appointments, budgeting and handling money? If you’re not, then you need to take into consideration that you will need a secretary to take care of these issues. While a secretary will be an additional strain on your budget, hiring one may be essential to making your practice a success. Perhaps a friend or relative can help you with these tasks before your practice flourishes.

Specialization

Look into all the services that psychologists specialize in and then choose a specific type that you would like to offer the public. By specializing in a particular therapy, you will be able to cut down on the competition in the area. If no one else offers your specialty, you may have more of an edge.
Talk to others who have their own psychology practice; find out how they got started and ask for tips that might help you. While the competition may not be willing to give you much information, you can get advice from professionals who live in another area or who you connect with online.

Clients

Start gathering patients before you open your psychology practice. You can start by telling current patients that you are planning to move. Another good way to attract clients is to volunteer to give free therapy sessions in your spare time. This could mean helping non-profit groups or doing over-the-phone counseling.

A good website is a must for all businesses and your psychology practice is no exception. Not only are websites a good reference to put on business cards, but it will also gain the attention of potential patients who are searching for help.
Although starting your own psychology practice may seem like a big challenge, it will have tremendous benefits in the long run. Not only will you have the ability to choose your own hours and be your own boss, but you will have new opportunities to reach out and help more people than ever before.
