In today’s interior design we often design the island as a piece of furniture rather than a utility object. Think of the island in your kitchen and what you can do to make it more eye-catching.
Starting with the islands function we will need to ensure that it is placed in the room precisely. Make sure that you have the proper clearance from the island to the oven and from the island to the sink area. Usually 36 to 42 inches will do. Next you will need the function of the island; cooking, washing dishes or just to eat and do homework. Will you need electrical outlets? Think also of the lighting that you will need to do these functions.
On the working side, make sure there’s room to store the things that are needed for the activity. If it’s a cooking island, then pots, pans, and spices should be at hand. The space under cook-tops is great for deep drawers for pots and pans. The storage space is limited on islands that include a sink or major appliances like a dishwasher or oven so you’ll have to plan more carefully for those. The height of your island’s eating area dictates the type of seating you’ll have: A 28- to 30-inch-high counter works best with a chair; a standard-height 36-inch counter is served best by a low stool; and a 42- to 48-inch counter requires a bar stool.
To make your island stand out think about adding extra crown molding and painting it in black or a contrasting color. Keep the hardware universal throughout the kitchen but do pay special attention to adding decorator details to the island that you would otherwise not add to your cabinetry. If you have variegated granite on your counter tops you might think of selecting one color from that granite to do the island top. The idea is to create the island as you would an important piece of furniture in any other room. The kitchen needs a focal point the same as all other rooms in the home. Creative with functionality and a beautiful statement. You can not go wrong with this project.
