CANADA, Sep 10 — Most people don’t realize the amount of choices that are available to them when it comes to ice fishing equipment. There are choices of clothes depending on the weather, choices of rods or tip ups and even choices of bait, string, shelters and everything else that you could think of.

The first choice of ice fishing equipment is the clothes that you are going to want to wear. Because ice fishing is always done in frozen temperatures you are going to want to dress in layers. The first layer is going to be something close to the skin and preferably made of cotton. There are many companies like under armor that make a specific product just for this reason. Your second layer is going to be a sweater to trap the heat next to your body. This should be thick and woolly as possible to ensure maximum heat entrapment. Your last layer, should be a layer of a heavier material that will block the wind. This should me made of a durable canvas or something like it.
If you have a long walk to your ice angling spot, then the less Gear that you bring with you, the more enjoyable your trip will. I suggest that you bring the bare minimum and definitely not a gas powered ice auger, those things are way to heavy. If you do want to bring lots of heavy equipment on your journey then I would suggest investing in an ice fishing sled. The ice fishing sled is exactly what it sounds like. Just a plastic or wooden sled that you can pull yourself or behind a snowmobile. You could also use it around your yard or even in the summer to drag your hunting kills back home.
As far as rods go, you have the choice of getting an actual rod with a reel on it that you are going to have to tend to and watch while fishing, or you could get yourself something called a tip-up. This nifty little device is just a lever mechanism that tips up when ever you get a bite. There are excellent because you can have multiple lines in the water and still have your hands free for a hot coffee, or cold beer.
Food and water are actually another form of ice fishing kit that you are going to want to bring with you depending on the length of your trip. This can be whatever you want it to be, just make sure that you bring a camping stove or something like it if you are going to want a hot meal. Water is an absolute must no matter what you are doing. Because you are going to be surrounded by ice and snow on your trip then you may want to consider a way to boil and purify it before you consume something that might be hazardous to your health. There are special pills that you can buy to purify water but the best way to clean it up is to filter it and then bring it to a boil for at least three minutes.
A shelter is not completely necessary on an ice fishing trip but it is definitely a nice thing to have. This can be anything from a tent with no floor to a full blown cottage that can be dragged onto the ice.
If you are in for a long walk to your ice fishing destination, then you are going to want to consider what kind of foot wear that you choose. Most boots come with a manufacturers tag that will tell you exactly what temperature that they are rated for. Some Boots are even equipped with extra bits that will help them stay attached to a snowshoe. Snowshoes are another piece of kit that you might want to look into before setting out. If you are in for some deep snow and can’t afford a snowmobile then they are definitely worth the investment.
Transportation to and from your location can be pretty much anything that you wan it to be. A pickup truck is nice when going out onto a lake but you are going to have to double check the ice thickness unless you want your insurance company to deny your claim and laugh at you for not declaring your truck an off road vehicle. A snowmobile is a much better option because it is lighter and just more fun. You can also tow your ice fishing sled behind it and it will take you to much more remote locations that a truck might not be able to make it to.
So when thinking about what gear and equipment to take with you, keep some of these ideas about clothes, gear, transportation and all the extras in mind and hopefully they will make your trip a much better one.
